I'm showing chickens for 4-H this year and just wanted tips,what breeds to get,where to get the chickens,how do you show the chickens,etc,etc,etc.Any information would be welcomed.Thanks

A great breed to start with is the Cochin Bantam or the Sebright.

Prepare a demo like this:

Wash your bird (link in my signature), buy one that poses naturally and make sure its tame.

Best is to decide which breed or breeds most catch your interest, and then get the best quality birds that you can afford from a breeder. As long as the breed and variety are recognized, your bird can place as far as its quality will allow. Non-recognized breeds or varieties are fun, but probably aren't the best place to start if you are going to be entering competitions at any level.

Well, you can decide what breeds you are interested in and post in the Buy-Sell-Trade section here, get copies of Poultry Press and call those hwo have ads for the breeds you re interested in, find other auction sites and place a "wanted" post, call your county extension office and ask if there are local poultry clubs and ask for contact information and ask them, ....

I used seabrights this year.... not a good idea. They fly alot and are really good at it, also they attacked my friends chickens, but very smart and pretty. Dificult to pose though. My main tip would be know your disesases and parisites inertnal and external.

For showing in 4-H, I always recommend starting out by contacting your county's Extension Office to find out what requirements your county has for showing. The reason I suggest this is that in some counties you can show mixed breed birds, while in other counties your birds must be of a breed and color accepted by the APA or ABA organizations. Some counties will also be able to provide guides on what to study for skillathon and showmanship.

After you find out the requirements for your county then you should look around and find a breed you like. I see that you are in Ohio, but not sure where you are located. This weekend is the Ohio National Poultry Show in Columbus. This would be a great opportunity to walk around and see a wide variety of breeds and colors to determine what you like. Also, while there you can talk to some of the breeders and ask about temperament of the breeds. Typically, there are birds for sale there, or you can get contact information of breeders to contact later.
