I dont know if there is a 4-H in my area.
How old do the kids have to be?
My oldest just turned 4 and I want to make sure to enter him in it ASAP.

4-H age starts at 9, cloverbuds starts at 5. Their age is as of Jan 1 of the coming 4-H year. So last year our meeting started in the fall, my daughter was 4, if she had turned 5 by Jan 1, she could have started, but she didn't turn 5 until Feb so she couldn't. This year she can. Sam with my son. He missed regular 4-H last year by 5 days, his birthday is Jan 6, but this year he is a regular 4-H'er. In our county that means they can bring their animals to fair to stay for the week, participate in a lot more activities, more crafts, etc. Cloverbuds often just show on cloverbud day and take their animals back home or use animals already at the fair. Their crafts and/animals just get participation ribbons, along with candy, etc.

To see if there is a program in your area, call your local extension office or do a google search maybe.

4-H has been the greatest experience for my two daughters. The youngest is off to college now so 4-H is done for us. We spent 16 yrs going to the fair. They both have walked away with boxes of trophys and some nice college scholarships. I recommed it for all children 5-18yrs. They can learn so much.

Ours starts at 7-8 yrs I think. Up until then they are in mini 4H. They complete little projects just like the big guys only they don't go to the regular meetings or anything. Speaking of meetings I think ours start up again in 3 weeks.

I never went through 4H b/c I was so involved in sports so I am re-living it through my kids.

Thanks for the reminder! The kids asked to get involved in 4H and show our chickens. I just made the call to the extension office to get a packet sent out!

Actually, I think one of the neighbor girls is wanting to show one of our chickens too - pretty soon our whole little town will be 4H-Chicken people, LOL!

It depends on what you are looking for. There is a lot of different things. Your child can join a club for livestock/poultry/horses/small animals, etc. Then during the year they should be doing a project with their chosen animal Keep records of costs/income, illnesses, breeding, etc. Along the way they should also be taught leadership skills, showmanship, community service, etc. There are many kinds of clubs besides as well, Science, horticulture, sewing, etc. Look at your extension, and it should give you the info you are looking for. Our Poultry club in just going into it's 4th year. There was not a club before this, because there wasn't anyone to run it. So, volunteering is always an option. The lady who is our club leader doesn't even have any kids of her own or currently own any poultry, but loves teaching the kids what she knows and helping them do their best! She saw a need and fulfilled it.
