When I went out to feed my chickens yesterday I noticed one of my buff orp roos was layin on his side and was lettin the other chickens run over him. I dealt with a similar problem a couple months ago with 2 of my "laced cornish" hens (Im not 100% sure thats what they are). Anyway I ended up losing one and saving the other so I seperated him from the others and gave him his own food and water. He ate and drank some but he seemed disoriented. I had his water in a bowl and he kept peckin the lip of the bowl instead of gettin any water. I figured he was tryin to peck at the flowers on it or something so I just let him be for the night. When I checked on him today he was sleeping and woke up when I uncovered the box but he never got up. I figured he was resting so I left him alone. When I went in to feed everyone tonight I checked on him and he was layin on his side again with his eyes closed. I thought he was dead until I picked him up and he moved a little. Im not sure what his poop looks like. He had spilled some of his water so any poop in the box was soggy and nasty. I gave him a bath since he was covered in the stuff and he hardly even stirred while I was washing him. Ive been tryin to give him some save a chick but he doesnt seem to have any energy to drink it. Hes wrapped in a towel in my lap right now. Hes had his eyes closed since I got him out of the box and will just flop over anytime I try and encourage him to stand or even lay down regular. His comb and waddles are pretty pale too.

Before yesterday he seemed fine. He had energy, was eating and drinking fine, skittish as usual. Nothing out of the ordinary. I really hope Im not too late to save him. Is there anything else I can do to help him recover. His crop seems to be empty of anything except water (or it may be air Im not really sure how to tell the difference or if air in the crop is even possible) He doesnt even seem to be swallowing most of the electrolyte water Im givin him. How can I be sure its goin down his throat. Id hate to drown him by gettin it in his lungs. Anyway here a few pics of him I just took.

aww...poor little guy..he looks so sick....I'm not sure what it could be, but I would keep giving him the water/electrolytes in small amount, frequently, maybe try some polyvisol with no iron, see if that perks him up a little. Has he been on medicated feed?

thanks for replying. I believe their feed is medicated. Its just regular chick starter. I got a couple droppers of food/electrolyte water mush into him. He still didnt really swallow so Im hopin it made it to the right spot. I suppose Ill know one way or the other in the morning. Hes my favorite buff orp roo so I really hope he makes it.

Well he didnt make it. The heat here has been pretty rough but (and Im embarrassed to say) they are all still living inside. Could living inside be harmful to them.

Do they get outside at all? If so, it could have been coccidiosis. I would treat them all for that. I have some that are still living inside and they are older than yours. I do let them out every day to free range. They are back in at night. This is due part to the fact I need to isolate for Marek's and we need to make another bachelor pad.

Oh, I'm so sorry he didn't make it

I don't think living inside would make him sick like that, if anything he would have had sneezing and stuff from bedding. I would definitely check your feed though, make sure it's medicated, if not then treat everyone for cocci as suggested by Leadwolf1.

Medicated feed does not treat Coccidiosis. It is a low level of medications that aids in the prevention of Coccidiosis. Chickens can still become infected if the Coccidia load is high. Whether they are on medicated feed or not, they need to be treated with Corid....you can find it at most feed stores.

It sounds to me like these chicks need to get outside! I just helped a silkie out of it's shell less than 48 hours ago and have spent hours with it outside. Fresh air and sunlight can work wonders!:)
