4 month old Buff Orp roo suddenly lethargic, weak, with pale comb.

Oh my. As I stated earlier I learn so much from this forum. I had no idea maggots could be a problem! How does this happen?

Maggots are fly larvae. They happen when either there is a wound or a prolapse that flies lay eggs in or on, or the backside stays covered in poop that they lay their eggs in it.

Ilovemyladies!, if you need help, best to start your own thread rather than have your post get lost in someone else's.

As to coccidiosis, medicated feed does NOT necessarily prevent cocci, even if they've eaten it from hatch. It may aid in the build up of immunity to a degree, but never assume cocci is not an issue because they've eaten medicated feed. I can only get medicated feed and until I got smarter and started putting a dustbath with soil from my property in the brooder from the first few days of life, I had to treat every group for cocci soon after they hit soil.

I wish I knew what was wrong with the chick in this thread. There are many internal things that could have been wrong, bad heart or liver, cocci, not really sure what to tell you. It's hard to diagnose something like this.

That bird didn't even look the age stated, so could have been something internal, some insufficiency peculiar to this one bird.

Coincidentally, I had a beautiful Buff Orp pullet of almost a year old begin laying at about 34 weeks of age, then quit two weeks later, start refusing to eat, began losing massive amounts of weight. We consulted experts, did special feedings trying to jumpstart her appetite, etc. Nothing we did seemed to work and she passed away two months later. Seemed that her coming into lay triggered something that was already wrong inside her. Sometimes, there just isn't an easy answer.
