Till your chickens are grown you need to make sure that no snake will get to them rat wire close any openings . Nevertheless sacrifice a chick or 2 a sake is good to have around if it's solid black .it will eat rats. Rats cause disease

Thank you for finding this thread and posting. It reminds me to get out to that little coop again to check for new mouse or snake holes, and look for ways to deter the wasps. I've got a new brood that needs to use it shortly, and another brood coming along in the incubator.

Yeah, I don't mind the rat snakes on the farm so much, I even encourage them; as long as they're leaving my chicks alone.
