I’ve got a young chick who has been sneezing for about two weeks. She had a few episodes of gasping as if something were stuck which always self resolved with a little sav a chick and time. She had been acting fine eating and drinking and not really sneezing often just occasionally up until today when she was sneezing louder, gasping, almost high pitched squeaking. Clearly exahusted and I’m not sure how much longer she will hold on.

Any advice for the rest of the girls or what this could be? No one else is showing any symptoms. Using hemp bedding. 9 babies of varied breeds from a hatchery. We do have another little lady who is blind in one eyes and very tiny but gets around just great.

Continued sneezing indicates something is irritating the respiratory system of the chick, either environmental such as very dusty feed or dust in general. It can also mean a CRD (chronic respiratory disease).

If you rule out dusty feed by fermenting or wetting the feed and rule out dust in the bedding and soil, then trying to treat the chick for infection may be the next step. Tylosin is easiest to use for young chicks as it goes in the water. https://homelabvet.com/product/tyclosin-500-30g/

Todays update: she was moved to a hospital brooder box, given Tylan 50 3 times today via very careful syringe as that’s what I had on hand, Denagard and electrolytes in her water. She stopped gasping ate some egg and dampened food eagerly and is now yelling at us from the top of the brooder plate to go back with her friends. We are now waiting and seeing.
