40*F !!! Did I ruin my hatch?

Quote:
It's in a garage next to my house. I can believe that it got down to 40, since the air temp was 25 at the time.
That gives me a little bit of encouragement, thanks.

Yeah sounds like it could have been down to 40 I still think you are likely going to do OK. Cold seems to put them in a suspension of some kind. They will almost certianly be late. Did your Ground fault breaker trip? That is what happened in my basement which is cold enough.

dont give up!!

i just hatched 100% of eggs that were at 55* for likely 10 hours (up to 10 hrs, i can only assume the thermostat stuck when i closed the bator, checked it 10 hrs later to find it at 55*). EVERY one hatched, no problems, and they were 2 weeks in the bator when this happened. They started hatching on day 19 and finished on day 21 (standar and bantams, hatched spread out as usual).

Thank you, everyone! I will candle and let you all know the results this evening.
This was a homemade incubator (that I have successfully used before) that uses a light bulb as a heat source, and the bulb had died. That was the cause of the temperature going so low.

I am gonna go out on a limb here and say your thermometer is WAY off. Unless your house was the cold, or colder, there is no way they would be that cold. Don't toss them - they are probably fine!!!!

I wouldn't give up either, but it is only fair to say that I lost a BUNCH during the power outage here.

A bunch.

I am very sad about it.

About 8 eggs lived out of 40 some.

I am trying to make myself feel better and encouraged by telling myself that at least the ones that lived are going to be VERY HARDY chickens!

Yes, it was in my garage like CC said.

IggiMom, sorry about the ones you lost

I may borrow that mentality, though - if they live they must be hardy!

Don't give up!
I had a broody silkie get out of her private brooder cage and she couldn't get back in, and when I went into the coop one -30 morning I found her on the coop floor and her eggs were very cold. I put her back in her cage and she hatched all the eggs successfully. I have a heat lamp in the coop but it doesn't warm it up enough to keep the water from freezing when it's that cold.
