As far as wood chips go: Those things are pretty substantial you buy them? There hundreds of millions of cubic yards of free wood trips on vacant lots here for months. They are all gone now finally. Should have scooped some of them up. I may just see how it goes with the chickens and mud before I get into storing and putting down chips. Not sure where to buy them as course as the ones you have pictured.
Dunno about your area, but tree trimming companies around here beg for people to take free chips off their hands. Even if the companies in your area aren't as gung ho, you can usually ask for a load to be dropped off for a small fee or a tip. Coarseness will vary wildly depending on how well their chipper works.
Finding a place to store them is probably the harder part. I doubt I'll be able to convince another truck to dump chips where my current pile is (in a boggy back corner of the lawn). Guy didn't want to do it the first time since the truck began sinking haha.
