4H chickens; can you help my 12 year old do well?

Is he entered in a pen of three or three seperate entries? If it's a pen of three, then the 3 that match the best. If seperate, the 3 best looking. If he's in showmanship, one of the 3 should be the easiest to handle and he should learn about that ones breed

All true! If an entry is a "Pen of 2" or "Pen of 3" then they need to be as close in size and color as possible. For meat chickens, they will hold the birds and feel their breast muscle, and they should be as similar as possible. If a pen of layers or a breed trio, they may not take them out to examine anything, but will likely ask the kid questions about their chicken, where they got it, what breed, etc - all questions should be easy for the kid to answer if they know anything about their bird. If a pen of egg layers, they should be the same breed and actually laying eggs (we've had judges check their pelvic distance and vents to verify active egg layer), and as similar in size and coloring/lacing/etc as possible.
