So will someone explain to me how 4h and FFA poultry classes work. I want to have meat birds and show them at the fair but do meat birds have to be males or can they be females?

Naomi, rules vary from state to state and sometimes from fair to fair. Even if I knew which state you were in I would not know what rules apply to your fair. My suggestion is to find out who is in charge of the poultry show at the fair you are interested in and talk to them. Your county extension office should be able to help you with that. You should be able to find the extension office phone number in the phone book (if anyone even uses phone books any more) or online.

Some of the things you probably want to talk to them about other than dates are what standards are they going to be judged by (there is no SOP for meat birds as far as I know), if they even have a meat bird class, and what vaccinations or medical inspection certificates are required. Some have a medical person available to do the required medical inspections, some don’t.

Here in Arkansas through 4H you can even get free chicks to raise for the fair. I have no idea what is available in your state.
