4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Good morning everyone.
What's going on inside our chicken eggs-Day 7:

From-Egg-to-Chicken-7.jpg

By the seventh day digits appear on the wings and feet, the heart is completely enclosed in the thoracic cavity, and the embryo looks more like a bird.

Seventh day -- beginning of toes
Now I feel the need to candle, but I cant! well I can, but I wont. mainly bc its daylight so I missed my chance to do it in the dark this morning, but tonight I will candle. Bad news though, not alot are developing.

Its weird though, the silkies were stuck in the mail for a week and almost all those are good, I have ther eggs that got here in two days that I dont think any are developing in, and my four bantam eggs i set, arent fertile. I have three hens to five roosters.

but i think the bantams prefer to breed the bigger girls, but oh well :/

Hello my fellow internet friends, I'm not even going to try to catch up since my internet has been down I'm about 1499 posts behind. Sorry. I hope things have gone well with everyone. You don't know how much you actually miss the internet until it is zapped away by a neighbor digging and how slow they actually are at getting it back together. I missed a lot. Sorry again

And I pulled over a dozen eggs last night....these are from my birds. I am checking fertility on them. Nothing on the Sizzles

Hens are laying great ...rooster obviously not doing his job, SLACKER !!!

Phoenix just started laying again...the 1st 5 eggs were clear...that rooster obviously got it together.

Pulled 2 tiny pullet eggs from my Silkies..the rest are going strong.

ALL in ALL not surprised with my results and I am happy with what I have.

Plus... I added Legbar eggs and White Orp eggs just a few days ago.

Decoupage works too for egg art!!!

Duck egg incubation: (how we do it, doesnt matter what incubator)

Humidity -
  • 30 or less during incubation
  • 70% or higher during lockdown (80% is great)

Temp -
  • we dont do any adjusting at all

Turning -
  • upright, auto turner has always worked fine for the duck eggs (EXCEPT MUSCOVY, we hand turn on their sides)

no misting, resting or anything else is done

Goose eggs however have a ton of hands on and effort put forth to have good hatch rates.

I tried to get pictures, but it was so dark and I kept getting some sort of wierd light in the corner of my picture with my phone. I thought maybe it was the flashlight, so I turned it off, and still, there was the streak of light. You can barely see my kids on their horse pulling the tree. I had a friend tell me once that orbs of light in pictures are the spirits of people that have passed on, so I told my kids that maybe it was Daddy with us... He was always our bright light...

We had a blast. My youngest son was a bit nervous about going out bareback in the dark, but he had a blast and said he can't wait to go out again! My daughter and I carried flashlights, and we went pretty far into the woods before we found a decent tree. We had a small hand-saw with us, so I cut it down and had a small ratchet strap to pull it with. My horse was a bit unnerved by something "chasing" him down the trail, so my daughter pulled it. Her horse handled it wonderfully!
I love this!

Wow. No pictures in hand, but always in your mind. Sounds like you had a great time! I have always wanted horses. Never could happen for me. But, I sure had ample opportunity to ride in my younger years..I always found a way. Loved it! Never though, did I ride in the snow. Shucks, sounds like fun to me. :)
