4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

SALLY! 8:30 PM is not too late to wash a dog if you consider that I wake up at the butt crack of dawn to do chicken chores, take care of dogs, fix breakfast for 4 adults and two 1 year old twin boys, then take care of those boys all day while taking breaks in between to do dog training. Spare time is spent making more meals for people, WORKING (I am a professional dog trainer with private clients and such), then making dinner, chicken chores again, bath time and bedtime routine for boys, dog chores, then get ready for bed. Somewhere in there I have to make time for a dog bath before my head hits the pillow, otherwise those big GSDs will never get clean. SO, I do dog bath late after the boys are asleep and I have uninterrupted time to spend doing it. Now I can enjoy them in the house all day!

I miss my rooster!!

The girls were eerily quiet last night when I went out to lock them in the coop. They were talking this morning, but I missed hearing his crowing. It is nice that the kids don't need to worry about being attacked when they go out to the coop, though.

At what age does a cockerel become fertile? And would it be bad for a son to breed with his mother?? I have 7 chicks that are 3 weeks old now, and I am really hoping for a cockerel or two from the NYD hatch... But I have 2 friends that I promised chicks to in the spring to start their backyard flocks of layers. That wont be possible until I have a fertile rooster... I'm wondering if I should look into finding a replacement rooster...

I miss mine too! Animal Control got me....

They should be fertile as soon as they start covering the Hens. Of course, that can take several weeks of Dancing and Courting...

Was yours covering the Hens? If so, collect the eggs for two weeks and throw them in the bator!

I bet you will have offers of many Roos by the end of the day if you want a replacement for your mean one...

Cynthia12, I'd also really love to have a Golden. My son loves to hike and takes our little Chihuahua and has to put him in his backpack after about a mile, LOL. He loves his dog though, but it makes me think he really needs a larger dog, and goldens can't be beat! In fact our neighbor has one, and there is a broken fence plank, that our dog goes through to visit and play with his golden friend there, LOL.

Lovely! Makes me sad though because I found my Frizzled Tolbunt mix roo dead this morning. He looked alot like this but more of the Tolbunt coloring. I think his brother has been ganging up on him and last night must not have let him back in their small coop from the run and it is not above freezing this time of year.

Oh that's so sad!!! I'm so sorry!

all maranhave feather legs!! wistle wistle

we have 7 chicks in the brooder, 7 pipping in the bator and 10 due to hatch in the morning!!! YAYA

Lord, I just adore those chubby little feet! Too cute!
mstricer WAIT!!

I lost already.... it says I only had 156 posts!! (still the top LOL)

BUT LOOK LAST 30 DAYS!!! OMG just from these contests!!!
Not sure you lost, but if you didn't make it, I think it shoulda started when you learned about it, LOL, too funny, keep it up!

Time to go bathe the German Shepherds! Also, does anyone know about putting your Polish's head feathers in pig tails? I was told to wash the head feathers (how do you wash a chicken's head? I have never done that) and keep the head feathers in little pig tails so they can see. If anyone has experience with this or tips, advice, or even some jokes let me know!

Thanks!!
I read somewhere, I think the polish breeder's club site, that people use electrical tape?? I have Sultans and am thinking of doing the same?

I'm down to just 21 of my original 60 eggs :( USPS isn't nice to my eggies...
I feel for you, but you're still doing better than I am. I have 4 out of 19 eggs still going. It's really honestly the worst time of year you can possibly have eggs shipped. USPS probably has 10 X the number of packages and mail to deliver (Ok, probably more like 3X) and they have reduced the hours and numbers of people working, so... yah, not good.

Good morning everyone.

What's going on inside our chicken eggs-Day 9

From-Egg-to-Chicken-9.jpg

Day 9: Starting to look like a chick. You can see the wings and legs really taking shape.
The body and head are becoming more proportional.
I always find it amazing how just about every creature starts out looking the same. Here, you'd still be hard pressed to ID this as a chicken and not an alligator, dog a human or an elephant! So amazing! Love these pictures you've found!

That is still late to wash dogs, he he he

This summer ya all woulda laughed your butts off at my stupidness...

picture this.....
nice HOT summer evening going to bed at midnight after a night swim and campfire with the kiddos...
finally snuggle into bed and my Buddy laying at my feet.... Only to realize how bad the stench is! OMG what in the world did this dog roll in??? The smell was horrific, I couldnt sleep I tossed and turned and finally after 15 minutes of grossness and debating washing the dog.... I get up and as quietly as is possible washing a dog, scrubbed the dog till he was red (ok I really didnt but I scrubbed the living bejimmeny out of the poor guy) well he jumps out of the tub whilst I am washing him, shakes, I get him slithering back into the tub to rinse him off, by this time, the floor walls and myself are covered with wet dog and hair..... so I dry him off and scrub the bathroom and then take a shower for myself.....

I finally snuggle back into the bed only to find the stench remains.... I strip the bed replace all linens and start a load of wash..... snuggle back in bed and OMG SERIOUSLY the stench was HORRIFIC I mean bad!!! And when I realised my window was open a crack and the stench was coming from the outside I was fit to be tied!!! Sometimes I can beat my neighboring farms up for spreading **** in the middle of the night!!! DUGHHHHH moral... always check your windows first!!
That's a wonderful story!

I was Wrong!

the older girls/pullets all came rushing to the door and stopped abruptly when they saw snow and retreated
sad.png

the three month olds (who are in a separate coop) all running out all excited before they realized there was snow, then all went piling back into the coop, HA! i got some pics..

we decided also to let the cats come in the garage, the poor things. one was huddled up against the door downstairs so i put him in there, one when i went out to feed chickens was hiding under the deck so he went in, but i didnt see macy, our little calico. OHHH IT JUST ABOUT BROKE MY HEART when i saw her all cold and calling for me to come pck her up. at first i didnt know where she was but then found her behind some paneling. I shoved her into my coat and dropped my phone in the snow, thanks to the good case nothing was damamged, but its all watery still

my two dogs were rolling in it, making dog angels, and running kicking up over everybody, they need manners hahahaha.
they came in surprisingly dry though, not a flake on them
hu.gif
Too funny! We had frost on the grass this morning, LOL. I'm afraid that's the closest we'll get to snow (though it did snow once in '93) But it was gone by late morning :(
