4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

well we hung with the chickens all afternoon, cleaned the layers coop, silkies pen, cochins coop, as well as the brahma pen.... they had snack time and we bleached dishes and so on.... they were pretty muddy today so not much holding going on... My Roo is sick or something... he just isnt right we all did pet him for a bit because we just dont know whats going on, no signs of anything, just seems tired! and doesnt even run away when the dog is in his face... strange poor guy : (

tomorrow they will all get warm oatmeal with some canned corn in it too...

All the dogs..... well they should just be glad I left them back in the house after they all dug a muddy hole to china in the middle of the septic system!!! I will message santa to leave the bones to those who deserve them!!! lol

I made two snowman towers of presents for my older sons and wrapped new Pjs around their necks lol

I dont have hats!!! UGGGG DH forgot them at Cabelas!!! suggestions???? I hot glued coal on them lol
I was upset because EVERY stinking roll of wrapping paper has guide lines on the inside of the paper! I wanted white packages! and out of butcher paper : (

ADDING a BTW...... skull and antlers..... LMAO one of my older sons furiture and crap is still in the lower level where I wrap and hatch!! thats his piggy bank and antlers from a buck he found on the job... he is in forestry
That's so cute! There is no way you could be old enough to have grown boys, I don't believe you!

Completely off topic here, but if any of you have ever said "I wonder how highland cattle and yak hair is different..." Well, this video I just made is for YOU! Haha
That was interesting! I think when I visited my mother's home town, that I saw musk oxen, all very interesting animals!
Getting closer to NYD hatch time, but at the same time seems so FAR away!

Just got done building a new door for the coop since this winter storm decided to rip it off the coop and wreck the old one. This one is sturdier and will look great painted barn red with white trim when I repaint the coop in the spring. Think it turned out pretty good and the dimensions are actually exactly what I started off planning for, which is a plus. LOL

What a truly pro job! Congrats on having such skill!
Since I'm expecting lots more birds this year we are working on diy chicken feeders made from things we have on hand.
This is a test run, if it works well then we'll make 6 or 7 of them, otherwise we'll tweek the design till it works.

The main point (besides spending $0 , is to have it hold 2-3 days of feed which will stay dry & get eatten not wasted (spilled etc).

So this is a homemade version of the $20 standard hanging style chicken feeder.

Made from 1x2litter bottle, 1xlarge coffee can, 1x 2 gal bucket w/ lib (food grade gotten free at doughnut shop), 1 wire clothing hanger (free bucket plastic handles break off instantly on use), 1x 2inch self tapping metal roofing screw which we had on hand, one DH w/ misc. tool & 40 mins time.

It will need to hand in a basically dry area, no rain or snow, but it should keep a 2-3 day supply of feed safe from minor dampness and useable.

I don't understand how it works, could you do a tutorial? Please?
CHICK UPDATE:

So all of my chicks are doing well eating and drinking and generally frolicking. But I noticed just about an hour ago that one chick was sort of hopping along and not standing up straight like all the others. I picked her (I think she is based on tip wing feathers) and her toes were all WONKY! I did a quick internet search and discovered that she has Curly Toes.

There were a few ways to correct this so that is why OPERATION UN-CURLY TOES commenced!

We made a little cardboard sandal in the general shape that her toes needed to be in. Then I taped on little pieces of toothpick. After I had the little sandal splinted and ready to go, we put her toes onto the sandal and I taped her toes next to the toothpick as straight and flat as I could. She is able to walk around better than she was before but time will tell if I helped or not. I HOPE I HELPED!!

I've seen a lot of posts where people did this and it worked really well, I'm sure it will for you as well!

Holy bad hatch rate batman! I knew with tj eggs great incubator omelette experiment, quail that were babies with roos not quite sure what to do and shipped eggs it wasn't going to be good, but I did a candling today and got 19 quail 19 chicken left. Out of a hair under 200. One entire set of 5 dz tjs eggs had zero development. So if you get tj eggs get them right off the dock and not after they have been in the cooler til 8 pm!
Other then that we have been staying home a lot dh still sick so we are missing the family stuff and it is pouring buckles out there. Its madness out there I'm glad I'm not driving. Kisses to all of you.
My hatch rate is slowly going down the toilet as well :(
Huh, good concept. Anyone ever use one?

(Probe embedded in synthetic egg to more accurately determine the likely internal temp of the eggs.)

I keep wanting to buy that thing, LOL, but I don't believe you can reset the readings by putting it in a glass of icewater, etc... I've looked at pictures, there is no reset button that I could find. Otherwise I think I would have bought it........er......if I had the money, LOL.
Holy cow. I have spent the day on the couch, with tylenol and Tussin DM on the coffee table in front of me. I woke up a few times, checked here once (now twice) and boy am I miserable! I woke up with my lungs on fire, my head felt like someone shot me, my neck stiff as sin and my hips hurt so badly that it felt like someone had crushed my pelvis. My parents took the boys after the family xmas party, so we had a night off and could spend the morning wrapping presents without nosey kids, so much for that! I vaguely remember mom arriving, G telling her that I was not feeling well, her saying "that's what you call a hangover" and him saying "she didn't drink" and that's it. G took care of the kitters, the birds, the boys and is now at the store buying me more Tussin DM, while I slept the entire day away. What a waste of a perfectly good day!
Wow, you sound really sick! Take care of yourself! Goodness, that's a bad bout of the flu. Make sure your hubby takes you right to emergency if it looks like meningitis 'cause some of your symptoms sound like it, and that can be dangerous. Take care!
How I spent some of my day...

Winter ride with the kids!!

My older DS is home for a few days!!! We exchanged gifts today so we don't have to haul all of our stuff out to my Mom & Dad's tomorrow...
Wow, that looks like a true Winter Wonderland from a fairytail! What a lovely day that must have been with the kids!
Yee! My sister sent us a Game of Thrones cookbook for Christmas as an early present, and we finally got to try a recipe in it! Here's the pork pie recipe from The Wall. It was sooooooooooooooooo good!

That's so cool, and looks delish too!

I'm sad, I lost yet another egg today when I candled. It looks like a black blotch in there. Last night it was moving, today, I dunno, it doesn't smell, but it looks like a bacterial blotch. It's still in the incubator 'cause I can't help but wish it just looks weird and the chick is sleeping (not moving) but I know it's a gonner

At least it wasn't my possible frizzle chick! I have 3 left now... Please hatch you little critters you!

I am just recently addicted to GOT.... I have downloaded and watched the first 2 season. I didn't even know that there was a cookbook. I already have some chickens named after the characters.

Cynthia...

We are looking forward to our Christmas Skype with our son in Papantla, Mexico. He's been there just one month shy of a year.

We will have the Elders serving in our ward for Christmas and they will skype and call their parents from our house.

Good times.

How exciting. I wish I had Skype! Our son left Oct. 24th. Our baby. The last one to leave home. Have to admit, it was kind of hard. He was with us as an only child for a long time..so, we are now finally feeling the empty nest syndrome.
Wow, lucky Elders getting to be at your home and to see their family from there. It will be a great day for sure.

That looks a little like what we up here in MN would call a pasty. (the a sounds like the a ib apple, not the a in ape). It's a beef, pork, and potato pie. Most people make them as individual meals folded over, but my Mom used to make them in a pie tin... Yummy!!!

That's my backyard... Well, my neighbors' really, but they own the 80 acres of hunting land with all the trails right behind my house.. They only come two weekends a year during hunting season, otherwise they told us we can ride our horse or snowmobiles back there. There's a great sliding hill if we ever get enough snow!
