4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

I was worried because my main thermometer 's batteries died last night...It runs on a 9 volt and so I had to wait until this morning to get a new one....

I just candled
...All 20 of my eggs have movement!!! I am so excited!!!

That's one of the reasons why I use a plan old lab thermometer. I used digital for awhile and then went back to plan and simple with both my thermometer and hygrometer. I always wondered if the moisture inside the bator especially at lockdown would make the internal parts of the digitals corrode or short out.

Well, apparently there is a storm.  We really must get some kind of TV so I know what's going on in the world.  The brand new trampoline (constructed yesterday) is trying to establish lift off.

I would really like to invest in a cabinet incubator, does anyone here have a preference Sportsman vs. Dickey?

Or just read the PA thread...you know I'm gonna get the weather before you!

I stopped candling, it has vastly improved my numbers.   Ever since I stopped lookin at them and taking them out…my numbers have stayed steady at 41.  ;)

Actually, this is not entirely true, there were 42 and now there are 41 and I didn't remove it….there was that visit from the grands yesterday…   Hope Mom checked their pockets after they left.  Or perhaps there's a half incubated egg in one of my chair cushions...

And here, you thought you'd been so careful with them there. Funny..mine all know the incubator is on the table in the kitchen....and none of them have even given it a sideways glance!

Quote: I have the hardest time reading the regular ones..always have! I have a thermocoupler..a really awesome thermometer a friend of mine loaned to me. He is a metallurgist and this is one they use at his company (aerospace). It looks like a walkie-talkie and has a cord and then a pole like sensor...this is the part I slip through the hole in the top of the incubator. It is super accurate and also has the capability to do charts and graphs and log all sorts of data about the different temp at different times....The only thing it doesn't do is recharge its batteries..and I someohow managed not to have a spare 9 volt of all things!

On the inside of the incubator I have the hygrometer which also has a thermometer. I also wondered about condensation but it doesnt seem to bother it too much as it reads close to the big thermometer.

I like the regular ones because you can calibrate them. I was using a digital one I bought at Walmart and there is no way to calibrate the thermometer part. When I placed a regular, calibrated thermometer in with the digital one, the reading on the digital was off by 3 degrees. On my glass thermometer I just took a fine point Sharpie and marked where the temp should be. That way it was just a quick glance and I knew if the temp was right or not.

The hygrometer is digital and the thermometer on it reads a degree off from the thermocoupler and the thermocoupler was calibrated. I dont seem to have the fan working as it should because I seem to have a temperature variance within the inside of the incubator. I'm not sure if this is correct but I assume the fan isn't circulating as it should.
