4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

I think I might be participating in the hatch along... I already have an incubator full of Serama eggs so I am sure I can fill it up again here pretty soon... Need to have a talk with my Serama and tell them work double time on laying... and a talk with the boys to tell them to get their business done

I think I will just set those duck eggs then I wont have yet another brooder going at the same time! She is going to ship them to me instead and I am gonna send her eggs later on when she gets her new bator..... I will set the ducks as it states Duck, Turkey, Pheasant (28 days) - 12/4/12 BUT WHY ARE MUSCOVY different than other ducks??? These arent scovy so I will assume to set the "ducks" date

Got this from page #1, post #1. Muscovies take 35 days, not 28. If you set them with the "ducks" they will be a week late hatching. You have a whole 2 days to get your eggs collected & set!!!

Muscovy (35 days) - 11/27/12
Goose (31 days) - 12/1/12
Duck, Turkey, Pheasant (28 days) - 12/4/12
Guinea Fowl (26 days) - 12/6/12
Chicken (21 days) - 12/11/12
Coturnix Quail (18 days) - 12/14/12

Well it looks like I might be hatching some ducks if the swap goes through, don't know what I'm doing with them afterward, although I do have two ponds....
They wont be able to be on the ponds for months. Ducklings swim with mom because she is waterproof and can help them, duckling have to completely feather in before they can be on large water of any kind. Before that small containers graduating to cement mixing pans and kiddie pools as they grow. As long as they can touch while still small and feathering in they can splash some.

Ducklings also need deeper water sources from day one so the can dip their entire head in it and clear their nares of food and gunk. Ducklings are messy, but worth it. They need more niacin than chicks do, so a waterfowl starter is best for them. If you use chick starter be sure to add brewers yeast to their water or food daily. if you are hatching chicks too you wont want to brood them together, ducklings love everything wet and will do their best to make messes.

Muscovy ARE ducks too, they are NOT mallard derived like all domestic ducks are. All domestic ducks take 28 days to hatch, call ducks can hatch early at 25 days and muscovy take 35. Most domestics dont fly well if at all, while muscovy can fly very well and have large claws for grasping perches such as tree limbs.

Got our second goose egg from the sebastopols yesterday, puts us 2 weeks ahead of last years schedule, but hey I will take it and smile. Did some stall sorting and added in their nest boxes(whiskey barrels) again yesterday. the ducks are laying like crazy still, even the french white scovy so we will have a fun group of eggs to set.

Bahh I don't know what to do, I want a small incubator and a cheap one for my first time so I was gonna get a chickabator or a mini dome. But now people are telling me it's bad and I don't know what else to buy so then I saw another small one for over 100 dollars and I can't afford that right now and now I find one for 50 dollars except it's bigger than I need and I still need to buy christmas presents but I really wanna participate in the hatch-a-long. AHHH I NEEED HELP!
