4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Hello everyone I have a new question. I know we were talking about feeding spent grains from breweries somewhere a while back does anyone know anything about this , I acutally just found a brewery and they said they have someone that comes and takes it all but If I show up befor its gone I can come with a bucket and get some everytime they have any. This would be like every tuesday and friday.
#1 question, can all pourltry be fed spent grains or is it just chickens( what about chuckar or quail ect)
I feed it to my chickens and ducks
#2 question , is it all / any spent grians or is it just one kind IE barley or hops or rye ect
They love chocolate flavored beer spent grains, so yes, all of it!
#3 can you put it in freezer bags and freeze it as I doubt it last to long wet other wise , can it be refrigerated if so how long
Mine often comes frozen. My kid sis is in NJ, so when they brew, into the freezer it goes till I come to get it.
#4 queston how long does it last at room temp
Umm...mine eat it faster than it goes bad. During the summer it would ferment in the can....which was cool...just added some feed to use up the "bubbles"

thanks:pop

UPDATE the past 24 hrs

Well I haven't been online in about 24 hrs b/c it has continued to be not such a happy hatch for me :(

I had the 2 of 3 I had to assist alive and acting great yesterday afternoon, w/ the surprize of new peeping from the pure Maran egg L

I'd only gotten 2 hrs sleep the night b/f so I thought it was safe to take a nap.

2 hrs later my special little Chick W was slumped over acting listless, I moved him closer under the heat from where he was laying on the wet washcloth
which was under the piped egg L (Brooder humidity was very high and this quick opening didn't change the reading).

I went to make some gator aid to as someone had warned me the assisted chicks might need it.
I can back to see the 2x larger half Maran Chick B pecking the life out of poor little W, I think he broke its neck before I could save him.

I was REALLY upset and regretted not seperating them, which I had considered due to the size diff. but they were both so lively I didn't think I needed to worry.

So then I spent a couple hrs on the floor resting my chin on the edge of the battor being sad & thinking maybe I don't want to try this again,
& watching Egg L start to unzip, which was going very slowly but I could tell L was moving freely to rotate so that was great. Then all of the sudden I head some tapping and an odd sound
while Egg L was resting, & of all the crazyness when I looked literally under my nose, below the egg turner pvc one of the eggs that was amoung the 4 I almost didn't put it at lockdown,
a pure Maran Egg K that had been silent, and not piped 2 hrs prior, was fully zipped & just hatched!! What the heck!! The chick I was sure would make it died and a "dead" egg suddendly hatches ???!!!

Egg L eventually hatched but the exhausted chick never really walked and died about 2 hrs ago.

So as of right now.

23 Eggs Set, 22 Locked Down.
Lots of mellow drama of didn't make it and late hatching maran eggs later
2 LIVE CHICKS : "B" & "K"

I still have the other eggs in the bator just in case like K they suddenly turn out to be alive and pip-zip-hatch-walk-start looking for food! all in some 2 hr burst of what the heckness...

I have to say I would not recommend Dark or Maran eggs for anyone's first hatch.
Also, these Maran chicks are nothing like any day old chicks or broody hatched chicks I've ever had, they litterally were eatting every speck they could tear up eggshells etc and pecking at the zipping L mercilessly like little sharks. While that was tragic for W & L I expect these 2 survivors to be some robust chickens! Has anyone else noticed the Marans to be different? or is it that I've only delt w/ non-vigorous hatchery quality chicks in the past and all of the better quality birds are like this?

Well I must confess, I have skipped all the 230 posts I missed in the past 24 hrs, I read everything else on this thread but I'm not going to read those, if I missed anything important or that I need to respond to pls pm me.

Hope all is going well for everyone else :)

These are the pictures of the chick that was prematurely ripped from its egg. The other chicks jumped on the zipping egg.

The skin was papery, the liquid moved freely under the skin. I think the shell literally pulled the skin off the body, and it could not reattach. It was very uncomfortable looking, and as the chick moved around, it sloshed. I am glad this chicky is no longer suffering, I just wanted to know if anyone had ever experienced this before. I will not leave rambunctious chicks to run with zipping eggs again.
Oh wow. I'm soooo sorry. I've never seen anything quite like that. I have had chicks who recently absorbed their yolk so it kinda looked like but was firm not sloshy. did you see the skin in the shell? I don't see how the shell could pull the skin off the body and i'd think there would be lots of blood. But I have no explanation for you either. Its really awful.

Aww I'm sooo sorry. Thats really awful. I had chicks cannibalize one that had pipped through a vessel but was going strong and starting to zip and they cannibalized it. It was horrific.

This looks more like a birth defect to me than anything done by the other chicks. The skin is there, just not formed properly & with too much fluid remaining. The skin is loose compared to a normal chick. I have had a duckling with something similar and it actually began leaking yolk. There were no other babies hatching in that bator at the time, so I know it wasn't an injury. Sometimes these things just happen & there's nothing we can do about it.

I've had several hatch a little early. And I've done lots of eggtopsies at various stages and have never seen anything like that. I don't think there's anything you could have done.

I should have taken pictures of my Weeble... It was too sad when she didn't make it...
I've had a few hatch with unhatched navels, but even if I took pics I've deleted them of the ones who didn't make it. Too sad to look at. Sorry for your loss.

Just responding to the marans question..no, I won't have a marans agian. They were always mean to my other chickens. And, I had tried three different times. They are the boss, at least in my flock. It is a small flock, may make a difference?

subcutaneous edema (large fluid volume in the abdomen)
poor thing had it bad : (

Omphalitis
Also known as
Mushy Chick Disease
&
Yolk Sack infection

Omphalitis is a common cause of death in chicks during the first week of life and most common with artificially hatched chicks. It is a bacterial infection of the yolk sac. Various bacteria may be involved in yolk sack infection, E.coli, Staphylococci, Proteus, Clostridia, fecalis and Pseudomonas

Ok, so I put a brace thing on it's little legs.

That looks like it will hold up! :)) I use electrical tape. Yep. I make it into small strips. Goes on easy, comes off easy..when..I am ready to pull it off. Otherwise sticks pretty well. Now for those crooked toes. Do you have any electrical tape?
big_smile.png
I would personally tape all three top toes on each foot. I take small strips..tape from top to bottom, I make sure that the tape goes beyond a little past the toe. If it is a bit tight, and you aren't past the toe, it can puff up. Just saying, some folks don't mind the crooked toes, I don't mind if they are getting around fine, but when it is so easy at this age, I go ahead and tape the toes straight.

Congrats to all on their hatches!

I'm calling it quits on my last unhatched Maran egg from my batch. I set 36, 22 were clears, 14 went to lockdown (should have been 13 though since I set 1 RIR egg that I know had quit around day 12) and 12 hatched. So, 12 out of 13 hatched (or 12/14 if you count the RIR). I have yet to eggtopsy the last unhatcher ... kinda hoping it was an early quitter rather than a late as I hate to think of them being hatch ready and then just not hatching, but oh well ... I have 12 lovely chicks that now have to live in my mudroom until April. Ahhhhh! What have I done! Photo of my brood to come once I set them in the big brooder cabinet ...

... which has progressed nicely (see below) I think. Still have to get the tray made, put in the heat lamp and attach the shelving unit (another recycled kitchen cabinet) to the top but ... what do you think? It has plexi-glass inserts for the windows (they are there now) to prevent drafts (which will be important since my dogs run in and out through the mudroom door (and it's winter). I'm going to add some knobs to the doors too. Not too shabby for an old kitchen sink cabinet and an old table top! When not in use as a brooder we will either use it as a recycle centre or a potting bench :) The front portion of the counter opens ... it was an old harvest table so we just turned it upside down with hinges up.

12 sixteen week old chickens in your house!!! Ack!!! lol. I love your cabinet and I admire your reuse skills!! Is that where they will stay until 16 weeks? Might get a little tight in there if so hehe.

Are you keeping them in because of the weather? I just moved some 6-8 week old chicks outside to the coop. I have some nice size box cages set up for brooding, breeding pairs or isolation. I have built a brooder box (an upside down box with two light bulbs for heat that they can go under) that fits inside the cage. I think they're warmer in there then in the house hahaha. This was teh perfect test because of course I picked the coldest weekend yet to try it, temps got down to -30 and when I check on them they're in there sunbathing!
