4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

I finally had my incubator up to 99.3 this morning... High temp had been 99.7, so I tweaked the thermostat up just the tiniest bit. Hope they're not cooking now, as I didn't have time to go home at noon.

My rooster has frostbite on his comb and wattles. Both were HUGE, and it hasn't even been below zero here yet, at least not for long. Now the tips of his comb are black, and the bottom edge of his wattles are all black and shrinking up. I'd put something on it, but he's not exactly social... He attacked my son again last night while he was feeding the chickens. All the poor kid had to defend himself was the feed bucket that he had just put 10 eggs he collected into. 3 of the eggs cracked when Rosco hit the bucket repeatedly. I think he has just sealed his fate. Hoping to have a nice cockerel out of this hatch to keep. Rosco is going to be soup... I'm really tired of my son being attacked. I guess I shouldn't worry about his frostbitten parts so much!

For this contest, the chick hatched must be from The 3rd Annual BYC NYD Hatch. The picture will need to be taken and posted by or before 11:59PM EST on Dec 31st, 2012. We'll be asking folks in the hatch as well as some moderators to help judge if they are willing. - This was taken from the contest thread

-Not sure how it can be from this year's hatch since pictures need to be in before the actual hatch day

Maybe we need to figure out the scoop on this.
I sent a PM asking for clarification. Any contests sponsored by Brinsea or Southland are being run by Nifty and Lothilier. They need to be asked the questions via PM since they don't frequent this thread.
So I am wondering... it was posted here that we could still set eggs on Friday and be included in the contests (but not the first hatched one) is that right? I thought that had been said because of so many of us are still waiting on eggs due to slower than normal shipping times. So I am waiting to take my pic and post it until my last set of eggs arrive tomorrow. However, the guess the number of eggs set contest ends tonight? How is that going to work??

It is supposed to be a guess.
It's a guess. You really shouldn't be allowed to guess how many eggs are going to be set AFTER everyone has set and posted how many they've set. It makes it more fair to guess before everybody's eggs are set. :)
agreed
If we set eggs a little bit early, can they still be counted in the hatch along (but not the first chick out)? Because I want to get my quail eggs in ASAP when they arrive, so I'll be setting them close to 11pm tonight, instead of 12 noon tomorrow. They'll hatch New year's eve into NYD.
That is fine.

I set 8 BCM eggs on the 11th... But didn't get my cochin eggs until the 12thso I guess I am just hatching the BCM for the contest, but I am feeling good about the coćins hatching on 1/1

Awesome, thank you! And, a huge thank you for the gorgeous coturnix eggs! They finally made it and all intact. Looks like they took a flight, so hopefully that won't hurt them too much. Hopefully I can still get a 50% hatch rate (or better?) out of them after everything they've been through.

Speaking of quail eggs should I just put a new boy in with my girls since I cant seem to get anything from the eggs from the boy thats in there now? He isnt all that young probly at least 4 months old he should be fully loaded right and not shooting blanks , I have an unknown boy I have never had with girls and one boy that I use to have with girls but he is so exuberant and persesntant about breeding the girls when he was in there that they got all bald and finnaly got fed up and started attacking him , so should I try the boy thats never been ? or the one I know is a good breeder eve though the girls hate him??

I was having a similar problem out of my RIR roo. We sawed Red's spurs off and he leaves everyone alone. I still want to get rid of him, but my dad won't let me. He thinks that since my nieces don't go in the pen that he;ll be fine. I beg to differ.

Well if you need a nice rooster, I have a younger (5 month old) ones that need a new home; RIR That is if you don't get one out of your hatch

I can always meet you somewhere between here and there.

Afternoon all - day 2! Snowy Thursday here ... I feel like vegging on the couch with a hot chocolate and playing on BYC, but I can't cause I have to work to support my 'habits' ...

Here is a snap of our coops ... forecast gives a heavy snowfall warning for the next 3 days. Hubby better get that snowblower working! Layer coop on the left, silkie/polish on the right.

I'll keep that in mind! I'm hoping for a nice Americauna roo out of the eggs I got from MrHeinz!! I'm also kind of hoping that one of my own little mixes is a roo...
