4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

I'll keep that in mind! I'm hoping for a nice Americauna roo out of the eggs I got from MrHeinz!! I'm also kind of hoping that one of my own little mixes is a roo...

I've always gotten a good hatch out of mrheinz' eggs, so you should have a few to choose from

. The two Ameraucanas that I hatched from him from this past Easter are both pullets and look identical. We call them the Bobbsey Twins. They never leave each other's side either. One of them is finally laying though!

Speaking of quail eggs should I just put a new boy in with my girls since I cant seem to get anything from the eggs from the boy thats in there now? He isnt all that young probly at least 4 months old he should be fully loaded right and not shooting blanks , I have an unknown boy I have never had with girls and one boy that I use to have with girls but he is so exuberant and persesntant about breeding the girls when he was in there that they got all bald and finnaly got fed up and started attacking him , so should I try the boy thats never been ? or the one I know is a good breeder eve though the girls hate him??
Id try the new boy first. Mind you, the old boy might have calmed down now, a moth is a long time in quail years. How many girls do you have?

I have 4 girls with one boy I picked him becuase he is really pretty with dark browns an big splashes of white but he dosnt seem to be fertilizeing them. I have two more boys the old white that the girls get snotty with cause all he wants to do is hang on there head feathers and breed them all day long , and another little boy that hatced the same time as the one thats in with the girls him and old whitey pants are in with butter the chicken to keep her company cuase the other chickens pick on her.

Wow 111 post sonce i was on here a few hrs ago.
Well i finally got around to candling my pekin eggs i set the 4th for the NYDH.
I want to cry. :( They have all died. This anit fair. I guess that temp spike killed them.Out of the 8 chicken eggs i set for a christmas day hatch looks liike maybe 3 may still be alive. Its not fair waaaaaa! I know im being a cry baby but cant help it.
Hope my bator dont spike again and kill all my chicken eggs for NYDH. If that happens im gonna throw away my bator and never hatch again.

Three eggs in the hatcher and all three are pipped. :D One leghorn and two cornish cross (covered by either leghorn or ameraucana, though I think leghorn since the ameraucanas just started breeding recently). I'm excited to have fluffies again! Hopefully in short time, I can move the partridge silkie that's indoors in with the babies, instead of by itself. I'll have to get the brooder bleached out and ready for babies. :) With everything hatching, and the quail eggs, I'll have to set up another brooder before long. :)

I'm so sorry!

I am new to the hatching scene, so how do you know they died? What exactly do I look for?

I don't see why not. I have ducks, turkeys and chickens all together. My two smallest chickens (silkie mixes), the ducks and the turkeys all stick in one group, and the turkeys protect the tiny chickens as if they were their own. You do have to be careful of blackhead with turkeys mixing with chickens, but my flock here is all clean.

OK, I had read that ducks that try to mate chickens can kill the chicken. So I always worried that would happen.

I know that the chickens act like middle schoolers, and ducks act like high schoolers, so are the geese the college kids? Do they have a sense of themselves and are the bosses? LOL

ya, just 1 boy then. Id give the new guy a few weeks, unless you want f1 tuxedos, then Id put the white guy in and see if he has calmed down. Or get them all hats....

OOOOOOOOOOOO, AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

NO! Stop it! Not even going there....but it's practically the sq. ft. of my bedroom!! Sheesh!!

Does it have to have the time and date on there? I don't have an atomic clock....

Glad you got some more in there- this does remind me, however, that at some point we should discuss the problem of the Lonely Only for the newbies here who may not be prepared for the demands and drama of a single chick.

What color should RIR chicks be? Best answer was yellow to brown for Red ones, white would probably be a White chicken. Never mind, turns out the Dad was an EE, so there will be muffs and beards and if a pullet may lay a green egg.

Brechin posted a wild looking thing with graphs and charts that will probably win the best invention prize. IDK people really like things made with ducct tape too so please keep posting your inventions. See post 2475

i think it may be older than me.....n that's OLD

Indeed, my cabinet is a very old one, and I adore it. I have one I made myself, as well, but nothing beats these old contraptions made out of wood from the good old days when it was slow growth and dense- it makes a difference!!

I don't have enough bad words to describe my feelings about cold weather. Suffice it to say I'm sold on the insulated bib overalls, Merino wool, and North (by Honeywell) winter coated gloves. Those are my uniform when it's cold out and I do okay, but it's still my version of Hell.

I've got my paltry batch of eggs set, and after hundreds in previous years, it feels quite odd to be only cooking a small batch but really, I've got hundreds of chicks, and I need a break for a bit, so I just put in the important ones.

I'm glad the contests I usually run are in the line-up! I get to enter this year!!

I am amazed at how many folks are participating, or even just following along. This is a great way to learn about hatching and get your feet wet, and we're always happy to share what we know.

I've caught up for now, but I'm sure hundreds of posts will greet me when I get back...off to the farm now!!

They can. Ducks have a more normal male anatomy then a rooster, and a chicken is not built for it. But some ducks do not look at chickens as lady loves. Its when they do you have problems.
