Since I'm expecting lots more birds this year we are working on diy chicken feeders made from things we have on hand.
This is a test run, if it works well then we'll make 6 or 7 of them, otherwise we'll tweek the design till it works.

The main point (besides spending $0 , is to have it hold 2-3 days of feed which will stay dry & get eatten not wasted (spilled etc).

So this is a homemade version of the $20 standard hanging style chicken feeder.






Made from 1x2litter bottle, 1xlarge coffee can, 1x 2 gal bucket w/ lib (food grade gotten free at doughnut shop), 1 wire clothing hanger (free bucket plastic handles break off instantly on use), 1x 2inch self tapping metal roofing screw which we had on hand, one DH w/ misc. tool & 40 mins time.

It will need to hand in a basically dry area, no rain or snow, but it should keep a 2-3 day supply of feed safe from minor dampness and useable.

pulled more eggs today! I think this may just be my worst hatch ever. only 11 for sure still going strong and two iffys out of 30

CHICK UPDATE:

So all of my chicks are doing well eating and drinking and generally frolicking. But I noticed just about an hour ago that one chick was sort of hopping along and not standing up straight like all the others. I picked her (I think she is based on tip wing feathers) and her toes were all WONKY! I did a quick internet search and discovered that she has Curly Toes.

There were a few ways to correct this so that is why OPERATION UN-CURLY TOES commenced!

We made a little cardboard sandal in the general shape that her toes needed to be in. Then I taped on little pieces of toothpick. After I had the little sandal splinted and ready to go, we put her toes onto the sandal and I taped her toes next to the toothpick as straight and flat as I could. She is able to walk around better than she was before but time will tell if I helped or not. I HOPE I HELPED!!

Sahwithchicks shared a story about relatives finding developed embryos inside eggs.

Sally Sunshine posted an hatch trouble sheet in post 4899. She also agreed with Blarneyeggs that visiting relatives is the #1 headache trigger on her list. Later she shared some Baby Chick photos! Adorable!

CelticOaksFarm shared a picture of his Brooder under construction for Aspen AKA Mrs. Fluffy puffy.

COF also has raised shelters for the Ducks! Aspen shared that she has Serama eggs developing!

No SleepyOwl it is not likely you! Those chicks just did not have the energy to make it! (post 4922)

And FeyRaine, take something and relax! Your hatch will be fine! FarmerChef still has development in the double yolker!

Bettacreek's little Duckling did not make it.

Still, there are two others still hanging on.

And the first turkey egg was found!

Jessiey asked when do you move the chicks from the hatcher to the brooder. The Chickener said when they are fluffy!

champer managed to get a post in about an OE that used to ride on shoulders!

Post 4972 has a candling video! Then Seah said: "Just wanted to pop my head up into the sunshine for a bit."(was that about Sally Sunshine?)

Sally embedded the Muppet video in post 4974 Sahwithchicks has a sick child! He is being comforted by a Toddler! Also, BCM Roos play with Toddler toys!

The Postman brought Jessiey a package of Hatching eggs on Sunday!

Then we made 5000 posts!

The trampoline spring did not send her to the hospital! She was spurred but the chicken did not have spurs! Hopefully more days will be this good too

Hurley posted a picture of the awesome new door to replace the one damaged in the storm. It is version 2.0 and is much sturdier!

So I'm currently drinking hot choc. but somehow I don't think that is what Ron had in mind for me ; P
& relaxing , humm, guess I'll need to work on that somemore...

actually, I feel lots better since we made the diy chicken feeder, kinda overcame the cabin fever.
so I think I'll leave the eggs alone & not even candle the questionable ones tonight, deal?
