4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

I still have to wonder how mother nature gets away without the lock down. It's very cold for these Eagles at hatch time, but still, take a peek at one that's hatched, turn the others, and there it is, one that has pipped or is zipping. They all hatch. I have watched the Decorah Eagles for two years...amazing. I always shook my head when I saw her...or him, get up off of the eggs when there was a pipped egg, and let all that cold air in. ??

The embryos do generate heat, especially later in incubation when they are more developed. It's not enough for them to incubate themselves, but it is enough to raise the temperatures a degree or so late in incubation.

This is a quote from GQF, "About half way through incubation process, you will note that the temperature will be increasing and you will have to adjust thermostat down nearly one full turn. This is normal and is caused by the embryo forming into a chick and generating heat."

I've seen this in many sources and I believe I read that you can tell fertile from infertile eggs using thermal imaging because the infertile eggs will be cooler than the fertile eggs which are generating small amounts of heat.

I don't mean to start an argument, I just thought I'd share my side of the topic.
I'm going to reset my camera to a higher temp resolution and see if i can find any elevated temps. I have the res set at 1 degree and haven't seen a real variation. But let me clarify, by variation i would need to see a distinct rise in temp on a set of eggs, not a singular egg. So that being said I would need to see 1 set of eggs x days in next to eggs say half the time in ( which i have) Now what I have observed with the thermal is a bad egg does start to put off noticeable heat as it decomposes inside the shell. I really need to figure out how to convert the images and upload some pics. its really neat looking when i turn off the heat once the hat air escapes to see hundreds of eggs glowing yellow @ 100f lol. experimentation to continue!

The Temperature will go up as the humidity goes down. The chicks are getting close to being ready to hatch, so they do not need to be as hot as they were earlier. After they hatch, the brooder is set at 95. You can hatch at 97 degrees and be fine. Do not worry so much if the temp is not exactly at 99.5 now. They will be fine and may hatch better a degree or so down from 99.5.

HAPPY LOCK DOWN DAY EVERYONE

sorry was trying to make nice with the pitbull next door with my calm Pyr puppy. No one trains their dogs to be nice anymore

Someone checked the humidity during a chicken hatch, and the humidity goes up at hatch! Broody hens do raise the humidity.

I see all the regulars are in here NICE. I hope everyone is locking down or slowly doing it. I will be locking down my chicks a little later. As I stated a minute again, my neighbors got this pit that they should have never have adopted (as a puppy) I think it still has the fighting instinct, short, stout and mean. Who all has pips anyone. I haven't looked at mine in 1 1/2 weeks other to check temp.
