4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Good Morning everyone! Finished my chores enough to drop in ;) I set 19 eggs, 3 made it to lockdown (but one didn't look active at that time, turned out a quitter) and had 2 hatch. One hatched upside down, and in hindsight, I should have just made sure it could breathe and left the shell in tact sans the little hole for breathing and let him do his thing. Fortunately, despite my interference, he's doing great. Here are my pictures:

This one suddenly zipped, and after taking this picture, I switched the camera over to video just in time to catch it throwing off the lid in a dramatic fashion and rolling right out of the shell! It was amazing!

He dragged a little blood around, but not much. Cute little bugger!

Then, the upsidedown pip that I had been messing with. Sinde the other one hatched, I waited a few more hours, but the membrane was getting dry, so I eventually removed it and took him out. He still had stuff in his belly, and he bled. It looked awful! But her turned out to be just fine. Lesson learned, leave 'em alone if everything else looks good (good looking membrane, could breathe, leave alone! LOL. I should not have peeled back the shell, and exposed the membrane causing the rest of the troubles!

Here they are drying off in the 'bator

Here they are in the brooder

And here they are again, sweet little peeping fluffy butts

I'm so happy for you! You were so worried about that one that pipped at the wrong end. But you have two cuties now. Are your chicks inside, or are they out in the garage? If inside, just a note..they don't need the red heat lamp. I use a 100 for the first day, then a 75 for a couple of days, then down to a 60 and so forth. That's, if they are inside. I love the one with the dark coloring on it!

That's what mine did too. I've now taken to finding videos on youtube of chicks peeping to try to encourage them to progress a bit, or at least to cheep for me so I can be assured they are still alive! I'm so paranoid right now. I was going to run to the store to get supplies for my brooder, but now I don't want to in case I miss my very first hatch. I'm glued.
The egg doesn't even peep back to me anymore!

It's probably resting. Hard work to wiggle around in that little tiny egg shell! Keep the faith fuzzy, keep the faith!
You're Welcome. He really is a cutie patootie!
Slates are really pretty, I have Pied, and would love to get some Powder Blues as well.
My ducks and geese have kiddle pools. = )

I bought my ducks a boat! I haven't installed it yet though ... spring time! Yes, they are going to swim IN their boat! It's a 16 foot aluminum that I am recycling.

the boat is a good idea!!

This morning I had two ducklings hatched and one was half out and now when I went for pics she is stiff!!! I almost flipped, she made it that friggen far!!! I pulled her out of the shell and it was filled with globby blood!!!! she musta ruptured her navel veins or something!!! OMG I was so sad!!!! WE ONLY have two ducks and I swear I WILL NEVER EVER HATCH ducks again!! or else I need to do ALOT MORE RESEARCH because I should have done some things different during incubation but I chose dry incubation route.. NOT AGAIN for DUCKS!!!

QUESTION: what kinda dish and depth water do I need for newly hatched ancona ducklings?

Just precious!

13 eggs left to hatch. I had to break the law and open the bator
hardly a chick could hatch because of the shells and chicks on them. hope nobody got shrinkwrapped. but i stil feel it was better to remove it than keep it all in there :)

Wow... 200 posts since I was on last... My brither abd his family stopped over for a visit... I was hoping to have them see some action in my bator, but my little eggs are stubbornly uncooperative! Nothing yet... No movement, no peeping, no pipping, no zipping...
