I gotta add between the ultrbator (link in sig) and the coolerhatcher, minus the parts I had on hand from other projects Ive spent less then 100 bucks

We use the pellets too and in the coop as well. Ive tried other bedding but by far the equine bedding is by far our fav. I dont put anything down on top of it tho. When i have new chicks going in i mist the middle with hot water and pack it down by hand. That way theres a pretty solid surface for them to get their legs under them..
I like the pellets because they seem less dusty and handle spilled water better. I start out with a layer of puppy pad over top of them until they are a couple days old.

Good to know. I never thought about putting anything down over it, but I guess that helps prevent them from splaying.I use shavings but put two layers of paper towels on top, and when that gets really messy, in about a week or two (depending how big/many birds are in there, I take it out. By then they've usually dug up a few bits of shavings, and have gotten their footing so they transition to the shavings really well.
Oh, you'd be a hero! LOL, that's nice!
Well I am skipping over 900 posts and just wanted to post that the silver pencil rocks I had that went into lock down have all died. One looks like it died about the time the went into lockdown, one was upside down in the shell and died without pipping, and the third is the real puzzler. It is in perfect position, beak lined up right under the air cell, it just never pipped into the aircell. membrane was nice and moist, everything looked good, the chick was just dead.I am sorry not to hang out, but it so depressing seeing everyone's chicks. I am going to go play with some of my older chicks.![]()
Wow - great hatch rate! I was hopeful that the 13 I locked down would all hatch, but now I'm not so sure. I'm at 6 hatched with 3 more pipped, but not action on the last 4. Crossing fingers still.I have had a great hatch with my Reptipro 6000! I put 38 into the hatcher and the last one is out, but not sure it will make it. It pipped at the small end, bled a bit and finally kicked out with a huge glob of yolk still unabsorbed. Even so I'm very happy with 38 hatching out of 40 set! My best hatch ever!
I may just have to try the pellets - we use it for our lovebird, but he never touches it as he has a wire grate overtop. Thanks for the suggestions! We use the pellets too and in the coop as well.
