4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

My little pair are quite cute together, they're always trying to crawl under eachother's belly! I see little pin feathers coming out but can't tell if I was lucky and got a frizzle yet

Anyway, they're finally eating a bit but I haven't seen them drink yet. I showed them where the water is though, so I think they got it ;) I just gave them a soda cap full of yogurt, LOL. Here's their first portrait, they're so darn cute together!!!

This last little guy was really struggling to zip. I've been watching him breath through a hole in the shell all day. It seemed right for the beginning that something was different, like it was wetter in his little hole than in the others. When he started to zip, he was really struggling and not progressing at all. In the time it took two others to zip and hatch, one after the other, he hadn't even gotten 1/4 of the way around his shell. His breathing was getting labored, and earlier, he had been chirping really loud, and had stopped chirping all together. I made a snap decision to try to chip away a little shell for him since the only other two pipped aren't even through the white membrane... I'm glad I did! He was glued! I had to wet him down and peel the inner membrane off of him... When I finally got him it, he seems strong, but really tired!
I'm so glad you helped him! Congratulations!
This is Tansy now.

Wow, she's stunning! Beautiful!
We have our first pip and are still hearing cheeping. Set 45 eggs, pulled 11 on about day 15. We saved eggs for about 3 weeks, so some were not fertile.
Awesome! Congratulations!!!!

Any reason That I can't use the bator for a brooder with only two chicks?

I'm not sure what kind of bator you used, but I can tell you why I wouldn't use mine. It's styrofoam and a bit harder to clean, not enough ventilation, would quickly become too small.

Do you have a plastic tankard (they sell them at Walmart for less than $10) or even a cardboard box you could use?

X2 In fact, I'm using a box right now. Won't even need the cage for probably 2 weeks, though they'll be going in probably in a week or so.

**IF** however YOU DO NOT HAVE AN INTERNAL PIP AND YOU CAN’T HEAR CHIRPING and YOU DO NOT see MOVEMENT please proceed to The Float Test ~ Checking Egg Viability. Give Eggs A Full 24 Hrs Overdue Before Float Testing ONLY AFTER CANDLING and NO Internal pips and NO internal MOVEMENT or CHIRPING! This procedure takes very little equipment Or time to do and Is Easy To Perform. If your egg is still viable, place back in the bator and wait! https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/383525/float-testing-checking-egg-viability-for-late-or-overdue-hatching
