Thank you! I will try again. I will have to, as I have eggs coming in a couple months. Maybe I will get lucky and have a broody about that time.

I am glad I bought the silkie chicks now (I got them to be company for that egg, in case it hatched.) At least we have fuzzies in the house to love on.

Aww, yah, and she'll probably make a great broody some day! I'm thinking of getting one for that reason...but I need to think it through, who would she live with? Would she get picked on? etc...

Update on situation:

I have 3 live peepers whom I'm trying to help:

Egg B -- loudest, I had made a small hole in shell only in air sack area b/f my last post.
I went back made the tiniest opening in the membrane where I'd piped the shell, then I tried to remove some tiny bits of shell to enlarge hole so I could see but on the second one it cracked the bit of shell down below the air cell and a spot of blood occurred (some dark featherness pressed against the slightly bloody tiny hole). I stopped. Later after dealing w/ the next two eggs I went back and opened the hole a little more on the top side as I'd initially intended.

EggE -- I got a good sized hole in the air cell (higher up so no blood)

Egg W -- very very weak infrequent peep almost missed it but then on candling again I could see a small irregular shape up in the air cell portion so I did pip a part of the air cell away as for the two above.

ALL THREE - only the tiniest amount of beak is pierced into the air cell (B has most, W is such a small amt it took forever so even see it). The membrane between the aircell and the birds looks like onion skin, white and papery almost totally dry. In the case of E I can see one wet area which has a red vein running through it so I don't think E has finished absorbing yet.

I'm 99% sure none of these 3 can move AT ALL to get any farther out of the shells, I'm not sure if that is b/c they haven't absorbed everything so there is not yet any slack room in the eggs, or its all shrink wrapped (suspected) but they appear to not be able to even wiggle their heads.

I have wrapped them each in a moist papertowle draped between the holes I made and the heat source/light bulb to try to prevent any further drying while they stay warm.

QUESTION -- how long should I wait before doing any more to help them hatch?

AFAIK,the outer membrane is white and papery looking typically, it's the inner membrane that shrink wraps the chick. I think they need more time to absorb yolk and blood. I'm no expert though, so feel free to ignore.

We have 13 hatched now, out of 37...mayhem in the bator!


Made a make shift brooder box...took the first six wild ones out of the bator to give those drying a chance to rest!


This little one was all sticky, and not drying...so it got a warm bath! It is doing great now!


This one is still moving, but it has been like this for hours!
