4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

No offense, but I think you moved too soon to help them. I don't start counting until the external pip. It can be two days from internal pip untilactual hatch. The veins in those eggs tells me that they were opened too soon.
I agree
except I didn't have any way to know that at the time, since they were 36 hrs past-due, & it had been at least 14 hrs since the internal pip which was after the incident of DH collaping the table and the bator taking the 2 ft fall/slam into floor, & since I discovered I couldn't hear the peep w/ the fan running, it was entirely possible they had internally piped any length of time prior to the 14 hrs I waited, even as much as 48-36 hrs more, plus the issue of low humidity & finding a 103 degree hotspot 8 inches from them. I basically figured they were pretty much gonners at least 3 x over by then, so piping to give them air felt reasonable as a way to give them a chance, of course now that I can see it, it is pretty clear they developed in a cold spot and are running behind.
This entire hatch has been a <to be polite> "learning expirience" & how a bator w/ a fan can have temps differing by 6 whole degrees in 10 inches of space is some kinda world record physics mystery! Well I'm gonna go make them another hot wet papertowel tent so they can continue to do their thing...

The casualties are beginning to mount...
I came home to find that one more egg was just about hatched. I saw that the two I helped earlier hadn't made any progress and the membrane was dry. I wanted the one to finish hatching before I took them out to wet them down, but as I watched, the Mystery egg one got weaker and weaker. It stopped breathing just as I de died I couldn't wait any longer... I wasn't able to save it. It hadn't absorbed its yolk sac yet. I had only taken the shell around the air sac off... Feeling terrible.
The other one I had helped earlier was ready. All of the veins were absorbed, but the membranes were dry, so I took that one and wet the membranes and teased it back. She's really weak, but laying in the bator. She freed herself from the shell and I have heard a few really loud cheeps from her, so hopefully she is getting stronger!
I was worried about all of the others, so I took one out to candle. No movement, no peeping when I tapped on the shell... I opened the shell, and the inner membrane was dry and shrink wrapped! I started opening the pips of all that had pipped, and opened the air sac of all that hadn't... They were all shrink wrapped!! I guess having to open the bator came back to kick me in the rump...
One of my tiny white eggs from Mr.Heinz was dead... Never pipped... Two more of my Mystery eggs were dead.... One of mine died shortly after lockdown, and another never pipped. I have 9 left in my bator, which is more like a chickie hospital now...
Two OE's, 1 mystery chick, and 6 of mine... One had pipped at the wrong end, and the rest had pipped internally right in the center of the membrane, then shrink wrapped.... I sure hope some of these babies make it.... Everyone else has been moved to the brooder... There are 16 healthy chick in there...
Yay for the healthy chicks! Hatching eggs can be very humbling, it's so hard to know, when or if ,to intervene. All we can do is try our best and hope for the best.

Don't feel bad. Hatching is always a learning experience. I've been hatching for five years or so, and I still learn new stuff. :) Just keep them moist like you have been and good luck! I think that's a turkey tom? And yes, he is pretty! No idea about turkey varieties though??
I wish so much that I had your energy! I find it so hard to motivate myself to clean, and now, I think I spent at least 4 hours today playing with my chickens

Yaay, congratulations!
Oh, hope it's only 24 hour thing, and that you're better tomorrow!
I'd like to know as well?
Again, I Third the question???
My first hatch, I had them opened up like that, then I wrapped them in wet towels, and when I wasn't looking, they climbed out on their own. They needed more time, and I did constantly check on them that they weren't drying out, and spritzed a bit of warm water around them and on their towel every once in a while... Hope they make it!!
Welcome to parenthood,

Watching the cam now :)
I'm glad you got 4 at least! Not completely empty handed, so congrats on them!

So questions....

Right before I started helping these guys, I literally watched one hatch completely normally, totally unassisted, yet every one of these was shrink wrapped, and one literally died as I was watching the other one hatch... So did I wait too long to help?? I kept having normal hatches all throughout the day today, so I never expected the shrink wrapping...

Why did these ones shrink wrap, when others right next to them did fine... These were not in one specific area of the bator, but spread throughout...

I suppose I should be happy being it was my first incubator hatch and I have 16 live ones already...

One of my quail disappeared. Literally disappeared. I think my niece took it out today and the kitters ate it. :( Talon told me she took it out, but that had to have been hours ago, and the house was just cleaned top to bottom with no popcorn baby found. :(

I'm thinking I would have done the same after all that happened! How could you know after having a bator fall 2 ft. off of the floor...good luck to you, if you go slow, you should be fine. They will want to lay around for a day, a day and a half once out, but should be ok. Do you have electrolytes for them once they are out. I usually make it up to be barely the color of the liquid..very small amount for those that are helped out. Then, I give them a tiny drop every hr..then two hrs..and so on, until it's been around a 5 time treatment. Then, I let them come around on their own. Yes, because of the early part of them being helped, they will be weak, but, they can make it!! Good luck again. I am just glad you were able to save them after that fall.
