There - patience paid off! But didn't you say in one of your posts that they weren't due to hatch until Friday? When you consider that chicks take (on average) 21 days to hatch, and you compare those 21 days to that of a 40 week human pregnancy .... taking away 1 day of development for a chick (roughly 2 weeks for human delivery) can be a pretty big thing.
Yay! Small miracles!
If hes ill maybe you dont want to do this but whatever is wrong with his legs they say you have to start to correct it within the first few days for it to work.Didnt read back to the post where you say whats wrong with the legs but hope its not bad.and sorry he is ill. Thanks you guys, he's a real cutie. I've never had a yellow chick before, hahaha. Probably the most common color, but I've never had one. I really hope he survives this possible "mushy chick disease" and someone mentioned using a lego car brace for his legs like the one entered in the contest. It actually probably would work. That would teach him to stand up straight and walk correctly.
An adorable loudmouth! And better that than silent.
I'm just lovin this cuteness overload with all the pics and then I turn around and my own are right there peeping at me!Oh boy, I'm loving all of the baby pictures! I have a few of my own. My Nankin started to really make noise around 4:30 in the morning, you know I had to get up to check. It started zipping real around 5..was out by just before 6. I put a towel in the brooder for her, she thinks it's mama, when she hears a noise, like me walking in, she ducks right into the towel. Cute.. I call all of my babies "she" when they hatch. Wishful thinking on this one for sure.
She started liking the handling, and was snuggling up against my hand, then I held her
close, and she snuggled right up under my chin. I love chick babies. Precious.![]()
Happens all too often here ... I work full-time so can only collect morning/noon/evening with 3-5 hr gaps in between. Since we live in N. BC Canada it's usually well below freezing. No problem ... I have 9 dogs so those that are cracked are thawed/cooked and split between them and the hens! It's 3 degrees here right now. Better than the - 2 yesterday morning. I've already heard the egg song from someone out there. Best get that egg. Went out the other morning to a split frozen egg. Never had that happen before.
Leave it! Keep the bator closed as much as possible. The chick will either reorient or just pip where it is.One of my hatched chicks rolled the eggs that. Just pipped so the pip is on the bottom. Wondering if I should reach in and turn the egg.
That's quite the bunch you got there ... I'm still getting used to the nekkid thing! LOL What are Showgirls? Sizzles? These are the 4 little ones that hatched for me.
Ringo (Serama mom/Showgirl dad) - naked neck, 4 toes and no feathers on legs
Star (Serama mom/Showgirl Dad) - 5 toes and feathered shanks
No naked neck
Chipper (Sizzle mom/Showgirl dad) - 4 toes
Alfonz - (Silkie or Sizzle mom/Showgirl dad) - naked neck, 5 toes and feathered legs.
It will be fun to see what they grow up like. This is my winter pen that will be separated a bit in the summer. We only have one Serama and she grew up with most of the Silkies, so she is pretty comfortable in there.
Started with 12 eggs...4 chicken 8 quail....I got 1 chick....the rest either never started it quit![]()
1897?! Cool story. I'll have to go look it up. Neat colour too. Thanks for taking the time to answerSorry if this was already answered.
There was a nationwide contest to pick a chicken breed for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The Orpington was not picked so it is not directly connected to the Diamond Jubilee but the type dates back to 1897. I can't find the specifics now but I think a strain of Sussex was picked.
Jubilee Orps are rare now having been imported by Greenfire Farms. They are reddish and have a speckled pattern.

I thought I was finished hatching, checked on the chicks drying in the incubator and one of the 3 remaining eggs has pipped.
Not sure what kind of bator you are using, but once hatching started I found myself a metal skewer that I could stick in the vent holes and that way I could gently roll the eggs around a bit. Saved me from opening the lid and therefore I never lost temp or humidity. Hope your egg fares okay!FACE PALM - I just seriously messed up!
Chicks B & W doing fine, I needed to check Egg L to see if it was making any sound,
a few hrs ago I set it on the wet washcloth I have in the bator to try to ensure it got max humidity.
Every other time when I've been checking the eggs I have held it inside the bator w/ the lid nearly on over my forearm and
LOOKED for a pip.
This time (being sleep depribed I looked at the top, reached in pulled it out to put it to my ear,
and there was a pip on the bottom !! EEK, so I touched my finger to water and water to the tiny spec of membrane
but if I just shrinked wrapped this one , wow, what can I say at this point, just wow...
Nope sxratch that. 3 black and silvers and TWO yellows one with black spot oon back.
Yes, please keep the bator closed!as soon as they dry ill take pics. Afraid to open yet still havr 9 to go and 4 are pippes. I would take pics thru site window but really crappy fotos
Beautiful photo and chick. II am aaaalmost done with my hatch. Still have hopes for the one last B&W silkie egg. Did a quick candle yesterday and saw movement, but had not pipped the internal air cell yet, so I am at least giving it a chance. It is my first experience with silkies...on a whim at the last minute thanks to BYC I found WVstruttin' in the next county with a dozen silkie eggs....and his blues came through for me to add two blues to the collection.
I was so sorry to hear he lost power for 17 hrs. lockdown day, and lost his NYD hatch. Our power blinked several times that day, but stayed on...and of nine silkies going into lockdown, eight are alive and well, and one still in the bator with hope!
Totally smitten with these lovely fuzzy footed babies!
Glad you enjoyed it and yes, the sentiment had meaning!Great pic : )
& better late than never is so true for lots of us -- since we have live chicks this am & my first natural pip we are having our black eyed peas & pork today.
Hope everyone has good thing happen in 2013!
Lots of time yet. This was my first hatch too so I completely empathize with your excitement and anxiety! Did you get to see them hatch? So cool eh! Enjoy!yes friday at noon is 21 days. That is totally my question!Fey is that a lavender or What color is it? Looks champagne!!!!!PRETTY!
Just double WOW .That is totally my question!
The Roo was BlueCM in a pen w/ Black &Blue Orps & Ameraucan (& BCM but the egg wasn't one of the darks so not MaranxMaran)
I got to see the birds when I picked up the eggs, they were all very good looking pure breeds. (Really hoping L the Maran x Maran makes it can't wait to see that one too!)
I don't really know all the correct color names but in person it is a like actual metalic silver, I haven't washed it yet so some of the shiny & glued down will clean off I imagine,
but the main color is just amazing! There are some strands of a light golden blonde just on the tips of the wings. If these colors hold this is gonna be one
