I'm a bit embarassed. I signed up and set eggs but missed the entire thing on new years due to a very unexpected family emergency and funeral. Just now back in town. I am sorry if my lack of notification and participation negatively affected anything for anyone. Please accept my apologies. I hope everyone had fun and wish I could have been here for it.

A friend hatched my eggs and out of 14, 7 made it, so a 50% hatch rate which is about where my expections were leaning.

Good morning all! So how many of you hatch-aholics have another batch cooking? I'm going to start collecting for my Valentines day hatch pretty soon. Although come to think of it, last year I had a Ground Hog Day hatch. I have some Silver Penciled Rock/Iowa Blue eggs on hold, maybe I should stick them in.

I've got staged batches running, with a new batch going into lockdown every 5 days. LOL Just put 19 into lockdown, your eggs are in the next wave.

Come on, SPs!

May have to hit you up this year for some SP "Rockawa Blues". Looking forward to seeing how they mature for you.

It might cost you an extra few dollars to acquire exhibition type birds, but feeding them and housing them, the cost is the same. I don't want to put the money and time into a bird and have it look nothing like the bird I saw and thought "Ooooh, I want them!"

ETA - even if I have no plan to show (which I do), I still want my birds to be what I enjoy watching at home. I have quite a few breeds that are non-recognized and will probably never be shown while I'm still around, but I want them to be good representatives of their breeds because I enjoy looking at them and they were what I wanted.

HUGE, with many of the breeds used in production, you can't even tell it's the same breed of chicken. The hatcheries will "infuse" the line with something else to increase egg production. I'd rather get a few less eggs, less broodiness and get a bird that looks the way I expect it to.

Hear hear! I agree! Unless the bird is a production hybrid, I generally steer clear of hatchery stock. The differences are staggering!

Photo contests should go to a forum vote in my opinion.

Not to offend anyone, but if that is how you want it done, you can host a contest. I have, and offered the prize too, and I decided the rules everyone played by. You have a choice to play or not. Either way someone is going to be upset with the outcome, and so as the host of the contest, who is putting a lot of work into it, I think they have the right to choose how to best handle it.
