4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Hopefully I will be hatching d'Uccles, Lavender Ameraucana, Olive Eggers. Most of the pullets are close to be laying around 22 weeks, The d'ccle's longer, but I have hens in there also. So hopefully I will have a few of those. I've been

them on, bribing with treats, well the Porcelain d'Uccle got the hint and laid today, she was the last girl I thought would lay.

That is what I will have them doing here soon, right in the coop and in the nesting boxes. Maybe I need to

I was worried about having chickys in the cold but seeing all the people signed up from the northern states makes me feel a little better

I am using an old styrofoam incubator, i hope it works ok. my dad's friend has been using it to hatch duck eggs, but im still nervous. I wanted to do a test but my dad nixed the idea. I hope it works out!!!!!!!! I am going to set some Icelandics, EE's, Welsummers, Dorking and Basque's So excited, it will be my end-of-classes-for-christmas-break present to my self

I'm in Northern Minnesota and plan on trying to keep them in our insulated garage after a few weeks in the basement. I know it is the coldest time of the year, but I think it can be done and the prospect of these laying by summer would be nice. Guessing I will be setting whatever is laying at the time, wish it was my new Icelandics, but I don't think they will be settled in enough by then.

I do a search on forum smileys and add them to my favorites bar and open up when online. It is fun, I guess I will have to share one day

It is really cold for chicks. I normally neveer have chicken in the house. For this special event I am making part of the basement a brooder for a few months. It is not going to be fun when they are about 6-8 weeks old. I hope by than I will have a new area done in coop that can keep them warm. I am insulating a special area for chicks. I am more worried about lack of sunlight in the basement and no exposure to the ground. Guess time will tell how this works out. I will have to make sure to bring in soil, dirt, etc.

Good idea about making sure they get a taste of the real ground so that they are a little stronger when the weather is nice enough to bring them outside. At least, it is my experience that they need that exposure to build up some immunities before they get too old.

I use an extra large dog kennel that way they are secured and I can either have an Eco-glow or a heat lamp on them and let them out daily in the coop until the get the hang of going in and out of the cage, then supervised out in the run, by that time every one is friendly and nice.

I've always been jealous of my family in the upper mid-west because they all have basements, and we don't I don't know why people round these parts don't have basements? There is no reason why a basement wouldn't be easily earthquake resistant. I suspect it's simply because basements are for bad weather safety, and we don't have that kind of weather. But they almost double the square footage of the house! Ah well.....

I have chicken crates and that is a good idea. I might incorporate that in the basement. 1 is about 10 foot by 4 foot. I love that idea..Thank you for the suggestion!
