I have 6 RIR layers. I've started building my coop but not sure if it will be too small. I plan on having external laying boxes and no food inside. They will have a decent run plus free range time. Opinions?

That should be good. 4 square per chicken as long as they get some good outside time. I've only got 3 and they have 10 sq. feet in the coop but they only get to free range when we are home. You should see them bust out when we open the door. Chickens dig there outside time!

4x4 is just under 3 square per bird.

In the winter time you will be looking at more clean time. Everyone pushes the 4 sq ft per-bird, but nobody knows why really. In a commericial hen house the birds are given about 2sq ft per-bird. I live in Gainesville Georgia the poultry capital of the world but they stay there day in day out they have no run. They get no free range time.

With all that said will 6 chickens have room to roost, and have room for feeder and water that will be suitable for 6 chickens.
