5 Crazy Things That Occur When You Raise Chickens

Sounds like me!

Cute article! I liked it! I and I agree with it, too. I've been raising chickens for something like fourteen years now, so it's been a while since I was a new chicken owner (and then I was just a kid at the time), but nonetheless it's always great to read the stories of the new chicken people. It's such a confirmation of what we veteran chicken people have known for years--chickens are addictive, entertaining, fun, interesting critters, and next thing you know you're collecting other fowl and being referred to as the crazy chicken person by everyone you know.

It's a great world, the world of poultry. I like to rope in as many people to this fascinating hobby as possible!

So true. I almost camped outside the first night the babies went into the coop.
"What if something attacks them?" I asked my roomate, panic in my voice. "If I am not there to protect them, they could all DIE!"
To which he reasonably replied "The dog is outside and the coop is secure. You really don't need to sleep outside. They will be fine."
They were, of course, but each time I move a batch outside I worry for days.

Loved the article!

For me, there are so many benefits from the "chicken lifestyle." Number 1, it's entertaining and so relaxing to be able to sit and watch my own personal chicken soap opera in my own back yard. Somehow, the worries of my human life just melt away as I think about why Wrong Way Scooter persists in her vendetta against Hermione, how Billina was able to go from a bullying victim to queen of the flock, or why Chicklet turned unto a grumpy old lady after raising chicks last spring....

Number 2, it provides nonstrenuous but regular daily exercise, cleaning up and pottering around the coop and run. Building the coop and run provided some fairly strenuous exercise, too. Number 3 is the wonderful fresh eggs. I've actually cooked eggs that were still warm. Can't get any fresher than that unless you train your hen to lay right into the frying pan. Number 4 would be the lovely garden fertilizer you can make from composting droppings.

no longer will I take offense at being called the crazy chicken lady !!!! Nothing is more fun that being outside seeing which looks and acts likes famous people. I have a Phyllis Diller. No paying cable to get the best show around. I just wish they could be on at night. watching them sleep can be fun to if your quite. I'm sooo glad you wrote the article!!!!!
