5 dead and 2 are missing I need your best replacement price

Glad to hear your neighbor agreed. I personally wouldn't charge them for the food, though. You would have been feeding them anyway, it is not a new incurred cost for you. Only if you had to order extra birds so they would stay warm in shipping would you have incurred extra food costs.

BUT, since you are going to charge them for food, you may need to recalculate the actual food cost that you just posted as it doesn't match what you calculated. Here's the math:

5 bird eating 2LBS/week is 10LBS of food a week

10LBS of food/week x 23 weeks is 230LBS of food.

25LB of food costs $8 $8 divided by 25LBS is $0.32/LB

$0.32/LB x 230LBS is $73.60

From what you posted, your neighbors were willing to pay for thier neglect. This is a great thing. You, too, seem to be a good neighbor by coming here to research the actual cost of replacing your birds so as not to rip them off. If you find that the food cost is incorrect the neighborly thing to do would be to let them know and adjust your totals accordingly.

Thanks for your response !!!! Now that I have my emotions under control and I see the neighbors are willing to make things right and also make sure the dog never comes back I have decided to type them yet 1 more letter accepting their apology and ( I know I am a softee) And I am not going to ask them for the full amount of $444.00 It is more about the dog not being allower to kill again for me. I am lowering the amount I first ask for. I do not want to put anyone in a finical bind and learly that would have been the case. And most important I ask them to reassure me that the dog would not be allowed to kill again. They will still have to go to court with the anilmal control citation that they were written and I am sure that will be a fine as well. Thanks for all of your help and tears that you all shared with me.

Do you need a replacement rooster or any hens? I have beautiful buff orpingtons and rhode island reds. They are at the crowing stage. I could also spare for you a white leghorn - purebred and beautiful.

I'm so sorry for your loss. You handled it so well and it sounds like you made the appropriate impact. We have such a problem with strays and dogs that are not fenced in. We lost 25 baby chicks (3 weeks old) and 15 3 week old bunnies from a "domestic dog" attack about 3 years ago and still when I think of the carnage that was done I cry.
