5 Gallon Galvanized Waterer

Yup, I had the top all the way on and over the metal tang and locked on.

I believe the rubber washer on the inside is to stop the water from leaking out while filling it. Once the lid goes over, the washer should no longer seal.

There was a good vacuum on it, the lid as hard to remove once the basin filled.

I am guessing that there was a small micro-pinhole that was causing the leak. I will try another farm store or mail order one.

Do they make heaters for plastic waterer's?

My SO bought me a hexagonal shaped plastic 3 gal. waterer for Mother's Day and I adore it. No more changing the water endless times a day. When the water does get dirty you just screw the supplied cap over the spout and pop the base off. When we go back to town this week I'll be getting a second one.
The only problem we had with it was not leakage, but the lid being so tight I could hardly get it off. Especially hard for me with weak hands, but it has a nice big handle to grab hold of. We solved the problem by applying a small amount of vaseline around the lid, against the rubber seal.

Boy, I'm glad to hear someone else say that. I have to go out multiple times a day and open the little plug and just let out enough water to fill the trough and then put it back on again....The thing is useless!!!!

The new plastic waterers that TSC is stocking this year (round) are a piece of JUNK

! Find someplace that still has the hexagonal waterers, I've never had a problem with them sealing. I thought the round ones would be nicer since the handle is bigger so I could get more leverage to open them, but 90% of the time I couldn't get them sealed

We used the little giant heater pans (also available at TSC) this winter with our plastic waterers and didn't have a problem.

My 5 Gal waterer from TSC did the same thing: would overflow a trickle of water until there was nothing left in the reserve.

I tried everything you did, too. Made sure it was level, hooked on the pin, good seal, little washer inside okay. Still leaks all the water out.

I'm taking it back to TSC as soon as I find the receipt.

I don't see why that wouldn't work, except that you'll be unscrewing the cap frequently which will cause the tape to come off pretty quickly.
The vaseline is cheap and easy to apply. It never comes in contact with the water and even if a tiny amount did, it wouldn't do any harm.

Well, duh, I forgot about that. You are right that vaseline would be a much less expensive way to deal with it. I'll try it.

Thanks
