First, let me say, this is my 1st ever experience at all with hatching. Our silkie hen has hatched 5 of the 9 eggs she was sitting on. I have no idea if the other 4 are going to hatch or not. I know I could wait a couple more days but will any more hatch, really? I am afraid that if I don't get the others out, the hen will not get up and lead the chicks to food and water. It is as if she is still broody and I don't know if it is because she should be and knows it or if she just thinks she needs to be. I don't want the new chicks to suffer or die because she won't move out. I tried to candle the eggs with a little flashlight but I couldn't see much. There was definitely an air bubble spot where the eggshell seemed very thin but I didn't see much else. I don't know if it was because I was using a flashlight or because there wasn't a chick. Will she get up if they don't hatch in a day or two? Sorry, I am rambling but I am just not sure what to do.
On a side note, I cleaned out the nesting box and moved mom, chicks, and eggs to a new, clean spot and apparently, Jack, our partridge silkie roo, thought the cracked egg shells were still needing to be sat upon because he got in the nest box with the shells and tucked them all nicely underneath his fluff and set about to cooing and clucking! Is it normal for a rooster to go broody? I know he is a roo because 1. He crows at all hours of the day and night and, 2. We have chicks! LOL!
Any helpful advice would be appreciated. If I just need to leave them alone, I just need to know. Thanks in advance!
