My 5mo old goose laid her 1st egg today. It's quite small, the size of a chicken egg. What do I do with it? I would think if I tried to hatch it maybe something would be wrong with the size being so small!? Any one know?

I would not try hatching any eggs that are not full sized. That's early for a goose to start laying. Have you seen her being mated?

My goose laid her first egg when she's ~1 year old, much later than yours, but her first egg's size was like a chicken egg's, too. The second was larger, and the third was of a typical goose egg's size but had a seemingly unusual long shape. The fourth and later eggs looked normal.

We didn't try to hatch any, so I can't give you any hatching info.

You might still need to make sure your goose has access to enough calcium when she wants to have some, though.

she is just tweaking here body if she is laying eggs at that age give here some free choice oyster shell. Enjoy the eggs there really good eating. Consider the age of your gander is he ready to fertilize the eggs. But please wait till you have a few full size eggs in a row before you start collecting to put one in the incubator. Quiting eggs are no fun and total guess work.

I was wondering if they could lay that early. Most of what I've read says it's at least 7 months before first egg but I think mine may've laid her first one! It's a little smaller than a typical duck egg

It depends on the breed the goose and how fast she developed. So yes can happen. My production Africans I started with were egg layers. White Chinese have also been raised for the same purpose egg production. So it is possible. The heavyweights I raise now I wouldn't see one till mid spring, they will be late spring before there even hatch able. First eggs with these kid'os are just to small for good development. My productions started laying in September there first year I got them from the Hatchery in April. I didnt know it then but the first eggs were really small. (my ducks are runners they were bigger than that).
So possible if you want to know her heath crack them open. check for thickness of shell, color of yolk, and if she is laying give her a calcium source or she will rob her body to build a shell

She's (African) penned with a couple new layers (they're all the same age) a Welsh Harlequin and a Silver Runner. The runner was the first to start laying (green egg) and mowing down the oyster shells when offered. Then a new little white nugget which was our Welsh. They've both been laying though not every day. Then a big egg almost the size of a normal sized duck egg, which seemed large for a new layer and a quick jump in size suddenly, so I wasn't sure if it were the goose possibly. They all have day long access to oyster or egg shells. I have 8 other seasoned layers but they are separate from these 3 at night.

Just randomly chiming in: I found this thread because my nearly 5 month old goose appeared to start laying and I was searching to see if it was even possible. There is so little out there that says "hey, yeah 5 months is totally possible." We got three that were born on April 9th. We got several chickens at the same time so at first I thought it was a chicken egg except... we don't have any chickens that lay XL white eggs. It's the exact same size as our Delawares brown eggs, maybe slightly bigger.

The one laying goose is moving a little slower and not holding her head up super high anymore. I wonder if it's a calcium issue now that I've seen this thread.
