I found my 5 month old RIW pullet today and she just wasn't right. I brought her in and put her in a cage in the garage and just now when I went and checked on her, noticed some bloody type mucous in the cage. I have never experienced cocci in an older bird. Does this sound like cocci or something else? I already put some Corid in her water, but she won't eat, so I may have to force the Corid.
Anyone have any ideas?

When you say--she just wasn't right--what does that mean? There is a disease where they cough up bloody mucous from the beak, is that a possibility? Can you please tell us any other symptoms? Any new chickens recently?

Sounds like coccidiosis. People say cocci, but that's something else. Corid is good. I know what you mean when you put meds in the water, and they don't drink. So if you mix it up, figure a chicken is going to drink 1/2 to 1 cup of water a day, so you might want to dribble it in, and see that she gets at least half a cup.

I am very familiar with my birds and their personalities so when I say she just wasn't right, I mean she is pretty forward and I found her just standing under DHs tractor-not like her at all. This is not from the beak-definitely poo(sadly I inspected it pretty closely just to be sure

). Feathers are fluffed a bit and she's not eating.
Absolutely no contact with any new birds. I've dealt with cocci in chicks, just didn't know if this was how it presented in older birds.
Thanks for responding.

I had a 2 year old silkie get coccidiosis. 3 days of meds and he was fine. But I know what you mean, he just didn't look right, all fluffed up and sitting under the raised coop. He also wasn't eating.

That's what I figured, I just wanted to get some wise peoples' opinions before I traipsed out to the coop at 11 at night to add Corid to all of the waterers.
Thanks a lot for your input!

Thank God for BYC at 11:00 on a weeknight. Whew, glad I already had Corid.
Thank you both for your help!

easttxchick I am praying .......

OMG

I lost two almost grown pullets the same way. I never did find out what the problem was for sure.... but when I put the corid in the water for the flock I did not loose any more and the other one that was sick recovered. There is hope and all the BYC experts to support us when things get unsettling. I will be looking for your updates girl!

:0)

Thanks all-hauled it out to the coop, chicken tractor, brooder box and 2 hospital cages in garage and medicated with Corid. Here's hoping it's not too late for my little RIW girl.
