We have 4 - 5 month old chicks which have been picked on by the older hens. 1 is getting braver about trying to join the flock, 2 are still hiding from the older hens, and then there is Ruby.

Ruby who was the same size 1 1/2 months ago, is now 2/3rds the size of the other 5 Month Olds, she has slowly been pecked on by everyone, and now we found her right middle toe appears to be broken. Ruby also runs to us whenever we would look for her hiding in the coop or the brush. We put her in

our pump house in a critter cage with food, water and clean straw. We take her out each day so she will get some grit. With her broken toe she walks but not very far.

Is there anything we can do for her broken toe? My husband refuses to take a chicken to the Vet.

She flocks to us, and becoming more of a pet at this point then we really wanted. We wanted all our chicks to grow and join the others. Any suggestions?

I would try splinting it as soon as possible before it heals like that. I have never had to make a splint, but you could probably make a decent one out of 2 popsicle sticks and some bandaids. The sticks on the sides keeping the toe lined up and held in place by the bandaids.

I have a 9 month old Barred Rock with a broken toe. NO idea how it happened or when. She isn't a 'touchy feely' kind of bird so there is no splinting option for me. I first noticed it was broken about the same time as you are (5 month of age or so). Anyway, she gets around just fine and doesn't seem bothered by it at all.

Yours does look very small though.
