I have 11 chicks about 5-6 weeks old (I think...the farm we got them from have us the ages but I think they were a little younger).

I noticed a bit of blood in some poop the morning, so I investigated in the brooder box and found a few spots of blood in the mulch.

I watched the chicks until I had my best guess at which one wasn’t feeling well, so I Took her out so I could see what her poop looked like. Sure enough, she pooped what appeared to be liquid blood. This is an Australorp chick.

I Plan on adding some apple cider vinegar to the water right now, but need to know how to appropriately treat.

I’ve had the chicks about 2 weeks.

Please help! My son will be devastated if we can’t help these guys as we already lost our first bunch to raccoons 😭

I highly doubt she has worms, that doesn't look like the right type of poop. Have they been outside before, and what other symptoms is she showing? When I see bloody poop it's usually a sign of Coccidiosis. I would treat them all with Corid. However, her poo looks a lot less like poo, and a lot more like straight blood. It's possible she might've accidentally been injured, and is bleeding internally. In that case, there isn't much you can do.

My aunt's chickens did this when they were chicks too. What type of feed do you give them?( Her chicks are almost laying size now they survived don't know what was wrong)

Thank you for your reply. I took out all the mulch and added corid to their water. I saw a different chick poop and it was bloody too, so I’m hopeful that it’s coccidiosis and the corid takes care of it. And not an injury that we can’t do anything about.

It’s non-medicated feed from the grain elevator. I’m glad your aunt’s chickens survived!

I noticed a different chick pooping bloody when I was replacing the mulch 🙁

Update: one of the chicks died this afternoon. One that I didn't notice was acting weird until this morning. The black Australorp pictured above appears to be stronger.
