I have a 5 week old buff orpington that I hatched. She doesn't move around much. She stands a lot, rarely lays down. When she is standing, her eyes are half open. She rarely hangs out or interacts with the other chicks. She has also never perched. She's really small. Her egg was labeled as a buff orpington but it was a slightly smaller egg than the others. she dosen't really look like a buff orpington, she might be a bantam buff or she's just not growing? She has grown feathers like the others. In short, she doesn't act very chick-like.
I first started noticing this around 3 weeks.
She had a round of antibiotics at 3 1/2 weeks and she seemed to perk up just a bit. I was also giving her nutri drench. At night she chirps almost constantly. It's quiet chirps though and she doesn't seem to be distressed. I can't tell if she's asleep because she looks just like what she looks like during the day. I attached a pic of her with a couple of the chicks that are the same age.
Any thoughts of what the issue might be or how I can help her?

Is this sand you use as a bedding? If so, where did you get it from? She might just ingest too much sand instead of the food. And I would de-worm her as she might have ingested contaminated sand.

How do her vent and poop look?

It's "play sand". I get it from home depot, bagged in 50lb bags. Ive used it for years in brooders with no problem. I usually have a bit of hay mixed in to keep them busy.
If I deworm her, should I do all of the chicks?
Her vent looks fine. She did have pasting
once when she was a week old but I cleaned her up and she didn't have any other issues.
I don't know what her poop looks like. I haven't actually seen her poop lately. I'll bring her inside for a bit and see what it looks like.

It looks as if she needs grit to digest properly. There seem to be quite a lot of undigested bits in her poop, so no wonder she is not thriving.

And you might also want to start them on Corid for 5 Days.

Yes, I would just de-worm all of them.

;) It will be three things:

  • Grit
  • Corid
  • De-worming

Right! I already made an appointment for the deworming. :)
I have the corid on hand and the grit will be delivered tomorrow.
Thank you so much for your help!

The chicks have grit, they are currently on the corid and will be dewormed today.

Daffodil hasn't improved or changed at all.
I've been spending extra time with her. She doesn't peep when I'm holding her, unlike when she's in the brooder and peeping all the time. She is so small so I weighed her. She is 4oz at 6 weeks old. For reference, the other chicks who are either the same age or 1 week older are between 12oz and 18oz. They are all different breeds though. She's fully feathered, same as the other chicks. I don't know if she's a bantam or just really small. Her egg was labeled as a buff orpington and it was a bit smaller than the others. Ive never had bantam chicks so?? I've noticed that she tries to eat when I put "special" treats in like mealworms or mashed boiled egg but she rarely gets any as the other chicks are quicker and take the food from her. I have seen her eating out of the feeder. I've been taking her out and feeding her separately from the others. Sometimes boiled egg or the chick feed mixed with water and egg. She just ignores the food unless I pick it up and drop it from above. Even then she doesn't eat much, just a few pecks here and there. It doesn't seem like she even gets much in her mouth when she's doing this. I'm worried she's starving slowly.
The chicks will all be moving to their new home at my school this weekend.
I'm worried about taking her.
As she's so small and thin, I'm worried she'll be cold. I'm in Texas so she might be fine. It's high 70's low 80's at night. She always tries to cuddle with the others and it works sometimes but once they get up and move she seems lost and just stands there. The new pen is about 4 times larger than where they are now.
She is small enough to get through the cage that they'll be in and into the chicken run. I wouldn't worry about it because she could always run back in which the other chicks would do but she's so slow that I could see her just standing there being pecked to death. She doesn't seem very bright. I'm starting to think that the cause for all this might be some mental disability. She doesn't try to fly, hop, or jump, or even run at all. When I hold her, she just sits, never tries to get away or explore. She is the only chick that hasn't tried to perch. Ive put her on the lowest perch and she just flaps her wings like crazy and falls off. Once they are fully integrated she'll need to be able to get into the coop and I am fairly certain she won't be able to do that. I put a small ramp in their brooder and tried to get her to use it but no luck. They'll be at the school so I would have to go over there twice a day to do that. I'm not sure the school will be a good environment for her unless she drastically improves over the next couple weeks.
