5 week old chicken splayed leg

I have been looking for advise on how best to help this chick. It was born at a school where I work and seeing some posts I am hoping it is not to late to correct this issue.

Any help would be appreciated as I would like it to have a normal life.

Is it just that one leg or is the other leg "splayed" out also? Chick looks to be at least 6wks maybe older, it maybe too late but you can try the brace and there's a sling that can rigged too. I don't have a pic and have yet to figure how to bookmark info but search the forum for Splayed Leg, Splayed Brace, Sling and you can also check out the internet website Poultry Pedia.

Perhaps some Vitamin B Complex crushed & mixed into it's feed or some Nutri Drench would help with vitamins & electrolyes. It's going to take alot of time & patience due to the late start on trying to fix the problem, and it maybe too late but there's no harm in trying.

Born may 21st. It’s just the one leg she/he seems to stand pretty well on the one leg. But the other one is not helping with balance. I did try the band idea but that just made her want to lay down and peck at the band. Could have been not enough of a span between the legs. I will post more pics shortly. Thanks for the info.

Try making the sling then put the brace on, it won't be able to peck at it and still be upright. Do therapy with it's legs, adjust the sling height so the feet can touch the floor. Start some vitamins

We have a chicken, approximately 6-7 weeks old, with the same leg problem. Ours is from a hawk attack one week ago. She had a peck wound under the wing in the upper leg. At first, we were mostly concerned with the flesh wound. We cleaned it and put Neosporin on it and isolated her in crate in our basement. She is up and moving around, keeps trying to stand, but cannot seem to move the leg into position under her body. She is doing really well, but if we try to position or bend her leg back into the correct position, she peeps loudly and is in great distress. We cannot afford to take her to the vet, but we are hoping there is something we can do to help her.

How long has the chick been like this?
Can you post a photo of her standing up so we can see the direction the leg is pointing?
Do you notice any swelling of the hocks or joints?

Also - is that Cedar shavings in the tote? If it is, remove those-they are too aromatic for chickens. Use pine shavings instead.

Cedar shavings? Oh, good catch Wyorp Rock, I did not even see that. OP said hatched May 21st so it's been quite awhile. It was a classroom hatch. We got two different posting going on, the OP/Lincro50 and QT4 just joined in.

If you tried repositioning it's leg and it was distressed, it could be from pain, so maybe its dislocated. A slipped tendon comes to mind but nothing vitamins will fix. There's a website Poultry Pedia that maybe helpful as to wha you could do on your own. What's your location? Perhaps there's another BYC Member close to you that can be of more help finding a reasonable Vet or medical help.
