I have 5 week old chicks and suddenly this afternoon Mom just stopped paying attention to them, doesn't want to free range with them or sleep tonight with them in the nesting box as she has been. She been chasing them away not aggressively but still feel bad. There are 4 of them, very healthy eating on their own. I checked on them tonight and they are sleeping in the coop on the 4th and 5th rung of the ladder below the loft where the rooster and his sis sleep.
Think mom and rooster are starting a romance again. Mom hen sleeping below with 3 other hens.
I've been interacting with the chicks from the start. The one on particular climbs on my arm.
If they free roam now I will have to stay with them but I have a very large run also.
Is this age ok for mom to just leave? Did I do something wrong by trying to keep part of the flock family and not distance myself?
No one is picking on them but the rooster has been getting with mom regularly now so not sure if that's the case.
One more thing, weather will be high 40s tonight all but one is fully feathered but they are together on the ladder.
