I have two ducks that are about 5 weeks old now. One is a Pekin. They’re both going through their feathering stage and it all seems to be going very well. However, yesterday I noticed for the first time that the Pekin is a bit smelly. It’s a sour laundry kind of smell. They both have bath time every day and I clean their brooder daily as well. It’s incredibly difficult to find info on smelly ducks and what it could mean, but since these are my first duckies, I want to make sure something isn’t wrong here.

He is acting completely normal, still eating, playing and drinking plenty of water. He’s had more wet poops than normal lately, but that’s the only change that stands out. His tail feathers do get a bit stained throughout the day, but again, they bathe every day at least once, so I would think the smell shouldn’t be there.

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated! Thank you :)

Well if there in water, wet poops make sense since they will be drinking more 😉 but otherwise sounds like a perfectly healthy duck... I don't know what would cause that smell 🤔

What are you feeding them?
Just pointing out the obvious but poop doesn't smell good. It doesn't surprise me that there is a bad smell.
If he's acting normal and bathes every day and has a good appetite, I'm inclined to think nothing's wrong. Still curious as to what you're feeding them, though.

So, I had them on starter pellets and the classic brewers yeast with garlic until the bag of pellets ran out, then switched to crumble since it was pushed on me by a tractor supply employee 🙄. I didn’t like how messy the crumble was and that it made my ducks cough sometimes, so they were only on it for maybe a week. (I’m sure swapping foods hasn’t helped, but I’ve gradually introduced them to the new ones the two times they’ve switched). They’re on Purina duck pellets now. They do also get dried mealworms as a treat and I feed them greens like celery, mint and lettuce every once in a while.

I ended up with a bag of Purina Flock Raiser crumble and I definitely noticed an uptick of runnier/smellier poop from my month old ducklings. Sour laundry is a pretty accurate description of the smell I've noticed. Being my first ducklings I just chalked it up to them getting smellier as they grow though. I haven't noticed any other health problems either for what it's worth.

I've also been switching them back to Purina pellets until I find something more satisfactory. I feel more comfortable that they're hitting their niacin requirements from the pellets too.
