My favorite girl of our 6, 5-week old chicks started acting funny this morning. They've been outside in their run and outdoor coop (still heated) for about a week now. All of them have been great until this morning, my little white cochin was standing still, kind of puffed up and holding one eye closed. She was walking around, still eating and scratching from time to time, but very slowly and holding her eye closed. No nasal discharge or anything.

We immediately removed her and placed her in confinement, and my husband treated the eye with VetRx within an hour or so of finding her this way, and she is now keeping the eye open more like normal.

However, as the day has worn on, she is sleeping most of the time and just acting more lethargic. She will drink if I dip her beak in the water (which we also treated with VetRx), but she is certainly not herself. And just tonight I noticed a very small amount of clear nasal discharge. Very slight, no sound when she breathes, and no sneezing that I've heard.

I'm hoping that we've caught whatever it is early... but not sure what we should do next. Antibiotics of some sort? Are these symptoms serious or relatively treatable? So far the rest of the girls seem fine. Any help would be much appreciated - especially stories of recovery, as I'm worried about her!!

Some background: Their coop floor is pine shavings, and the run has a soil floor - which we've supplemented with grass clippings and leaves for them to scratch around in. They have been covered (so dry) but weather took a turn for the colder overnight the night before we noticed her acting sick.

Thanks -
