Hi all,

Can a wry neck be caused by an attack from other hens? My dominant hen, a 5-year-old EE, was visciously attacked by a group of 2-year-old hens when she went into a molting funk. Since then, she has been cowering and confused. Her neck has been slowly twisting and today her head is almost completely upside down. Anything we can do for her? She is standing, but not able to eat and drink. She is the sweetest and prettiest of all our girls, and I'd hate to lose her to something nasty like this. Does anyone have any ideas?

Wry neck as caused by deficiency is a possibility, stress rips nutrients out of the organism so whenever animals have been stressed, whether it's due to injury, illness, or social stress, always assume they need more, because they do.

Marek's is another possibility, many diseases incubate until a sufficient period of stress enables them to become active.

First stop is a multivitamin/mineral/nutrient mix/supplement, generally, can't go wrong with that almost as a rule, no matter what the problem is.

Best wishes. Hope she makes it.

Torticolis or wry neck, crook neck is a neurological symptom of vitamin deficiency (vitamin E, B1 thiamine, and selenium,) as a result of head injury, or inflammation caused by infectious diseases. I would place her in a quiet area, put her on vitamins including thiamine, vitamin E, and selenium. Selenium is found in eggs, chopped Brazil nuts, and sunflower seeds if your vitamin doesn't have it. Feeding he may be a challenge since she may need help in eating a drinking. Here are some links to help, and the first one has vitamin dosages:
