51/2 wk GLW roo or pullets?

That is too bad about the meat birds.

I didn't have the heart to butcher my hens when I ordered some roasters several years back. We kept three, the first one was attacked by a raccoon and died at 18 months and the other two lived well into their second year before dying of natural causes. They were the most tame birds I'd ever had, and they laid a HUGE white double yoker egg nearly every day! I did keep them on a strict diet with lots of veggies and limited access to feed, but it was totally worth it. I miss them!!!

I think it is great that you raise your own animals to eat! I think when you are raised that way it makes it easier to do

My family didn't move from the city to the country until I was 12 so the city girl was pretty ingrained by then. I was in FFA as a teen and raised a steer to sell at the fair. It was a bit sad but I understood what I was raising it for. It is hard not to get attached, so I hope your son will be ok with it

You shouldn't have any trouble finding homes for your extra roosters because they are beautiful and you don't often see them offered for sale. I have the Blue and Blue Laced Red Wyandottes and they are beautiful too! Chickens have a lot more personality than one might think! I just love mine!

Have fun with your chicks and BYC!

still hoping that at least two GLW are hens, I am assuming by the feather coloring that my SLW are 2 roo and 2 pullets so that would give me 4 hens and 5 roosters. sigh. I guess I should only keep one rooster myself,(if hubby lets me) but which do I pick. An SLW or a GLW? Can I do one of each? Are there more guesses as to what I have?
PS If you are wondering where my chicks are in, we converted a poly calf hutch into a portable chicken coop. We put wire on the floor so that nothing can dig underneath and wire on the door and window. They really seem to enjoy it in there.

I guess 3 roos out of 4.

here's a picture of my pullet at about 7 weeks old for a comparison.
