5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Ugh. Hatch-A-Longs... we have a love-hate relationship... haha! They are just so temping! Luckily I still have a few days to decide. I wish I had some bantam eggs to put in the bator! :(

My d'Uccles have stopped laying...buff mottled...and my chamois Sebrights are just nearing POL so wish I could send you some...but not yet!

I hope you join!

How do I join? Hoping to have 12 silver penciled plymouth rock eggs to set. Would like another 12 of buff, partridge, or blue plymouth rock eggs too but cant find any right now.

Well,  I  just didn't think of the hatch-a-long and I set around 35 eggs total in 4 batches starting November 12th.  The first were from my Silkies (my hen is sitting on more!) but none of those were fertile. This makes the 4th round of Silkie chicks from my new roo purchased as an adult early this year. I have trimmed butts and tried all of the "tricks" I have read, but none seem to work. He is gone this spring! and I will havereht to find another. For where I live, my best option will be to buy eggs from really nice birds, at least close  to show quality. I don't show but want nice birds. The rest of the eggs I ordered, I set starting the 15th. I am presently visiting my daugter in westermost MD and I live 5 miles from the very eastern most part of VA. Hubby will be taking care while I am gone. I have already thrown away some that were either scrambled, had blood rings, or air that was moving around in the inside and no growth there. Will something cause this other than getting shaken around in transit???? There were several others that I couldn't tell for sure, so I left them incubating.
My bantam chicks have always hatched at 19 days. I have never tried bantamized large fowl eggs and the ones left in my incubator are bantam Cochins (some frizzled). I think bantam Cochins are bantamized? Are they not the same as Pekins???
Anyway, at 19 days some will already be hatching and the rest shortly thereafter. Someone told me that bantams hatch at 19 days and mine do, even when my d'Uccle hen sits on her own eggs.
I added my questions and notes here when I saw the hatch dates for chickens and am wondering about the 19 days for bantams.
Sorry for the additional questions, but I figured maybe someone could tell me here.
Thanks!

My bantam langshans almost always hatch a day early.

Hi Deb, just to let you know, your absolute very best option would be to find a breeder NOW. Everybody is culling down to their very best birds to overwinter and breed in the spring. You could likely get a really nice cockerel without the guesswork of eggs and shipping. Just my 2 cents.

I joined, but because of moving around New Years, I am worried about chick safety. Could I move them at 3 days old? It'll only be 20-30 minutes in the car, and a brooder will be ready at new location. I'm planning on Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, Amerucana, and possibly Marans.
Yep, they'll be fine. Like someone said, make sure your car is already warm inside before moving the box of chicks into it. I don't envy you the additional work of hatching and chick care while you're moving, but they'll be fine if you do.

It's looking like I won't be hatching during this hatch along. However, we did have some chicks hatch yesterday under a broody and are they ever cute! I'll get some pictures in a day or two. We are receiving an arctic blast with horizontal snow right now and I refuse to make the hen get off the nest for pictures.

YAY! They shipped another incubator! And it's here, it's here! And hey, if I get lucky, maybe the other incubator will show up eventually :D

Told my girls today, they better get with the egg making or I'll hire their replacements NYD ;)
