5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

400

Eggs came Saturday but I believe they're old and had a bumpy ride... 18/24 had detached air cells ..,none broken but I accidentally broke one... Then checked 2 they were scrambled.... So not so sure about this. Eggspecting more eggs this week but may not come in time.... Hmmm

Remember all eggs are insured now if the Po screwed the air cells you can get up to 50 dollars back...

Thanks I let them sit overnight in a styrofoam egg carton fat side up. Won't disturb until 72 hrs... And cross everything... And hope.. Well I do have another 24 hopefully they will be better..,

Woohoo !! Won both auctions. The bator is gonna be topped off this year. Seramas and Cochins both! Hoping to raise them and sell the eggs (for hatching). Maybe show the Cochins. :) soo excited!! Haha you should have seen me bouncing off the walls waiting for the second to bid. I swear I cleaned the incubator twenty times in anticipation. Jeez I'm helpless

:ya Congrats on the auction wins!!!!

If I understood you correctly, in troubleshooting low hatch rates, if the unhatched have developed say to day 17 or 18 & then died so when you open & look in you find that they have not absorbed the yolk at all, & often not actually turned right side up as they would need to in order to pip, but they appear in all visual ways to be correctly formed so it looks like they should have continued those last couple days, & you find that you have a large number or even all your eggs do that then the issue is ? (a) slightly low temp or (b) lack of oxygen ie not enough airflow into the bator in the final week.

That would explain so much about the failure of my DIY bator last year!!

I've long since upgraded to the a LG incubator but even so this clears up some puzzles for me.

Mine were scheduled for delivery yesterday, but didn't come. I am hoping they will arrive tomorrow. I am putting a heating blanket and a sign out on the porch asking the carrier to put the box in the heating blanket so it doesn't freeze before I get home. Last tracking update they departed san diego on the 6th. USPS says they were shipped on the 5th, 2 day priority, so the sender tried to avoid the weekend delay, but the post office dropped the ball.

Be careful with the heating blanket. If it is above 80 degrees you'll start embryonic development.
