5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

okay so i shouldnt let them sit for 24 hrs? If i have a turner in my incubator should i just get the turner straight and put them in it then plug in the turner on day 5? i appreciate all the help! I have a back up thermometer and i have a hydrometer coming in the mail. And i even got some aquarium tubing and my boyfriend said he will rig it for me so that during lock down i can add water without opening the incubator. Im so nervous and i keep looking at my incubator set up even tho its just sitting there and not even plugged in!

Yes!

The best thing for shipped eggs is to incubate them and let them stay upright for 5 days without turning them. They need to not be handled during that time so no candling until day 7(boy is that hard!).

I hope they make it safely to you!

thank you!

I'm excited! ill let you guys know when my eggs get here! my puppies 1st birthday is on the third so maybe he will get baby chicks as a present

he loves my chickens and they don't mind him since he is a small docile jack russell
Did you say ... docile Jack Russell? Fostered one...Not! lol...but loved the dog. Went to a lady that wanted a jogging partner.

Sounds right.

I wasn't sure I was getting enough ventilation in my homemade incubator/hatcher monstrosity. I got an aquarium air pump with a splitter and pump air into both units.
yeah i was thinking that it looked like my incubator doesnt have enough ventilation holes but i guess for this first hatch ill trust the factory settings and adjust after that

haven't heard anything about this but just think of how much money is being spent on that.
I have heard of trying to make an egg that makes silk protein but not a plant that makes eggs. That does seem weird.

No handle, no candle! Now we rhyme

Waiting for my eggs...so, waiting for that phone call from the P.O.!

Have to ask. Have a lot of you done this sitting the eggs upright in the bator for 5 days before turning? I don't have a turner, so they go on their sides. I tried it for a three day period once, in an egg carton. Things went about the same, maybe I should have gone the 5.

Jack russels are great jogging partners for sure!!! my little guy comes out with me when i feed the animals in the morning and runs around in the woods checking everything out and then he comes back inside with me and curls up in bed :) we are on the same schedule :)

i hope they make it safe too! I will be picking them up at the post office so maybe that will help. So i shouldnt even check the air cells or anything? Ill have to wait till day 7!!!! oh man. The anticipation is killing me. My boyfriend didnt work today because of the weather and i want to take advantage of his day off to help me design my brooder (in case i need any power tools ;)) but i know that if i get too prepared that i wont have any chicks hatch :( so im just going to wait until lock down to set something up (i have old rabbit and hamster cages that i can use :))

I would stick with what the instructions say.

In mine, the redundant heat elements are pretty strong so I can err on the side of more ventilation.

okay! i just wrote down a bunch of notes in a notebook like what the instructions say about temp and humidity and what you guys told me here :) and i made a chart for daily temps humidity and notes. then hopefully i can find out what exactly went wrong for next time!! cuz i know this is turning into an addiction... Im hoping to get a rooster or two so that i can let them mate with my hens that i already have and i can hatch my own eggs :)
So ill candle once a week or more often?
