5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Hello, day 12 here for me (Xmas day hatch) and we have some very hot days coming up (days 15, 16 & 17 of the hatch) temps due to be 38, 41 & 37C (100, 106 &99F) Any advice on what I can do to help broody (Nell) and eggs through it? I always keep water and food next to Nell so she can reach without moving from eggs. The coop is technically mobile - but very heavy - we could move it to under the carport so it is in constant shade, but I am worried Nell will not take the move well and abandon the eggs - it would not be a smooth move! Will take 3-4 strong people to move it: - Any advice gratefully accepted!
Anytime it gets hot where I am, I freeze a jug of water and put it in their water. It really helps them to stay cool. I have also given them watermelon and put a mister on. They are so spoiled.
That will work for most birds but not a broody since she stays on the nest. If you have a way to run electric you can blow a fan through the window to keep the air circulating & help keep the coop cool. Just don't point it directly at the nest.

Hope you figure something out..can't imagine worrying about a heat wave right now! All I know is..that is one dang cute coop!

How about freezing 2 liter bottles of water and put them in the coop to lower the temp?... If u can get a fan run out there, then put the frozen bottle in front of the fan...

Ron, I filled in the survey even though I didn't set eggs for this hatch. I just hatched a bunch of chicks in the past month & almost always have at least 1 bator running. Just couldn't swing it right now with the move. My last batch of chicks hatched less than a week ago while I was moving. As soon as I find space for the bator & the girls get back to laying I'll be back to hatching.
That is fine!

I see 5 eggs developing so far on my grocery store eggs!!!!!!

What? Total eggs set? Where do I guess..or is it too late?
I am so sorry! It is one of our contests on page 1. It is closed now.

I'm confused about this member survey. Do we only need to fill it out if we plan to get rid of the chicks we hatch? I plan to keep anything that may hatch here, but would take chicks off anyone local to me (aka no one I'm sure lol).

On that note, I did a quick candle earlier and looks like only 2/15 developing. So much for best hatch rate LOL. Oh well.
I will set up a thread on the buy sell trade section with the results of the survey. I set the survey to be open until January 15.

I had the same question. I won't have any chicks for sale, ( I will be lucky to get more than a few) but would love the opportunity to acquire some from others.

I filled it out, marked no chicks, now what??
The Survey is set to allow you to go back and re edit it. If your change your mind and want to sell some then you will be able to until January 15. If you marked no then you will not be added to the sales thread but you can change your mind. I do not have plans other than sales but someone might have other ideas.

At this point I'm unsure what and how many chicks will be for sale. I love the idea!

See above. You can change the survey later.
Eleven eggs set. First time trying d'Uccle and Phoenix. Any difference that I should make compared to Brahma or silkies? Heard that smaller egg can hatch a day early.
I have hatched everything the same so far so leave everything set for chickens.

Breed is more important than size for the number of days for them to hatch.

It looks like that is a database error--What file format was the picture? Did you make if smaller? I make mine 1024x768 10 quality jpg files.

Report the error to the Administrators.
I have been hatching chicks for capayvalleychick for three years now. We shared a McMurray order too.

I think her SG Dorkings are very nice. They are likely one of the best flocks in the US at this time. I do not think she gets enough credit for what she has done and her methods of getting there. Of course she is very modest.

Hint: Pay attention to what she posts on the Dorking thread.
Thanks for the tip! I certainly will!

Finally got a picture of the eggs. Not a pretty one.
There are 47 eggs. They're all Black Penedesenca. Not all my birds. I got 2 pullets from a friend that laid light eggs. In the interest of new blood I put my biggest rooster over them. Normally I wouldn't hatch eggs that light. About 7 of the eggs are from them.
I set 24 the afternoon of the 11th, 22 more on the 12th and 2 more yesterday. I discovered one broken when turning this morning. I'm not counting it bur I cooled it rapidly and I'm going to seal it with wax and return it.
I discovered more issues with my hatcher. 2 of the 4 fans have failed. I'm still going to move the eggs into the cabinet today. I should be able to get replacement fans in time.

What do you mean by not a pretty one? Those eggs are beautiful!!

Can't wait to see them hatch!
