5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

If my air cells are too big, do I need to raise the humidity?
Yes, if the air cells are too big raise humidity 10% and adjust again at the next candling if necessary. The chart is in the first post of this thread.

Good Job!

Well Multi-quote appears to be acting up so not sure how this will appear but --

SFH+ Swedish Flower Hen (as others have noted) , one of the recent (2yrs?) imports by GGF, these are landrace so a very wide ranges of body shapes, colors, even egg colors - very fun & pretty Forest Gump Box of Choc. sort of breed. Since they are so new those of us w/ them are still trying to figure out what are common traits to the breed vs individual quirks of individual birds, so far one thing we have noticed is the hatch rate on shipped eggs tends to be noticably even lower than other breeds :( . There is one or more active thread on BYC about these birds. GFF says the hen eggs tend to be jumbo & plentiful, I can't yet speak to that although I have gotten 2 eggs this week which _might be from "Flo" the SFH who's pic I posted. The eggs which might be hers are brown, but a very light pinkish, just a little darker than "cream" which is the most common name for SFH eggs although they can be off-white to brown.
These eggs are equal in size to the 2 brown eggs I've gotten this week from my older hens (a Del or a Blk SexLink) so I'm hopeful the SFH Jumbo egg is true. Anyway, the roo over these atm is a CL but they are going in the bator all the same b/c I'm curious to see what hatches ;> I've got 3 or 4 SFH cockerals growing out atm so Flo will get a new boyfriend in early spring...

Sadly the 8 SFH NYDH eggs all looked no good last night. I thought I had 1 developing but since the broken egg ordeal I don't see anything in any of the SFH eggs, I left them in another day just b/c it is too sad. But I also pulled 4 other obvious blood rings last night.

To all the newbies w/ suddenly too dark to see anything eggs -- very very likely that new darkness is developement! esp. in the green/brown eggs. It is confusing, but early on I nearly tossed some of those only to have them hatch when they ended up in LD anyway (sometimes getting distracted can be a good thing).

Same w/ blood rings - I had marked BR? in pencil on some green eggs I intended to toss, then a couple days later I found they had live embryos bouncing around...it can be really hard to tell, but here is what I started to go by: If it isn't certain, I write a BR? on the egg the 1st time I notice the issue so I can remind myself when I next candle, a couple days later I can usually make a good call. The other thing is since the blood ring (as others have stated) is the decay of what were once blood filled viens they will get more & more fuzzy and blotchy, as opposed to growing eggs which will have good viens that continue to be clearly defined & red (the older bloodrings start going brownish).

As someone else noted, fresh batteries in your candling flashlight can make a difference, & I do pull out my "granny glasses" b/c squinting just does cut it anymore! So don't be shy of using some magnification if that helps you see better...

To the ppl wondering if you have to toss the eggs - the risk is if the egg is bad it could explode. Another reason I mark ?able eggs, so I can keep a really good eye on them for ooz/weeping or the faintest smell either of which means get that egg out fast but gently as it is a time bomb. Otherwise, I keep them in, as a few esp. in hard to see eggs have totally suprised me.

MFL- I think 1 of 4 is developing, sigh, I was pretty egg-cited about these, well I hope if it hatches it is a pullet...

I am setting 5 more eggs tonight, to go w/ the 8 I set last night, so an extra baker's doz. of my home grown CLx mutts to make up for all the sloshy quiters in the shipped eggs. Gotta keep the bator full while it is on to keep even temps, right (back me up ya'll!!)

My girls actually labeled one of my xmas gifts "To: The Crazy Chicken Lady"! We have a tradition of putting silly names on xmas gifts for each other.
