ive got about 300 posts to catch up to......skip a day on BYC and you miss allot! haha

what makes this better is I just made myself a vanilla latte

one question to go with this......my humidity is relly hard to keep up with right now.....Christmas eve, 84 degrease, Christmas, 43 degrease, yesterday, 28 degrease......
my humidity yesterday said 55% and at night went to 61%, and had been that ever since.

will this high humidity ruin the chicks?

who else is going on lockdown tomorrow? im just a bit nervous!

Can anyone take a look at my air cells and tell me if they are large enough now that I can add some humidity, since I've been running dry for a week? I posted before and no one specifically said if the air cells looked like the right size. The smallest circle is at 7 days, the middle lines are at 10 days, the biggest circles are from yesterday...day 14. Thanks!

I candled two eggs yesterday......I don't know if being on day 15 it would've made a difference or not, but I see NO air cells! I just see a black blob on top, and billions of veins below....

do you think this is bad if I cant really make out air cells?

Since we get a lot of traffic here was wondering if some could answer me a question about fermented feed.

I buy feed from local feed mill last batch of fermented feed I did was 14% protein layer and scratch no problem with it. This time I got 20% and scratch since they slowed laying down and have some younger chickens in there now. The problem is I have a rotten egg smell on like day three. I started with clean buckets and water with acv w/mother.

What could they have added to make smell bad or do I have bad feed?

Personally, I would have him build the more permanent structure for outside as long as you have someone building for you. It's no picnic brooding chicks in the house during winter, but it is a temporary situation and an outside structure would something you'd have for a long time.

Good point.
I also like having more than one housing option for quarantine for new, sick or injured, separate breeder coops, broody housing, growout, etc..

LOL my sister told me how dang cold it was...I told her she could keep her negative fifty degree temps, ain't no way in h-e-double hockey stick she'd EVER convince me to move up there to be closer!!!

And I thought the teens we hit last night was cold! BRRRRRRR!!!!

Wow, does that ever sound familiar!


I have some of those horizontal drinkers in 1/4 in. PVC pipes in my brooder house. They aren't active now because I had to shut the automatic water systems down for winter. I'll try to get a picture of the system tomorrow.

How many ways can I say "crappy thermometer".
I have a box full of crappy thermometers. Keep in mind that most are only required to be ±2°F. That's a 4 degree swing.
Ron posted a tip early on about an oral thermometer, which is just about right for incubating. I think they have an accuracy of ±0.2°F
If you do buy one, try a meat thermometer probe and then compare it to an oral.

I can't believe how many people use them. I'm actually on my second one to use as a backup to the homemade cabinet.
I recommend turning the knob so little it is almost imperceptible and wait a couple hours before you adjust again. If it is really high, open it briefly to let some heat out.

I don't know if they still do but the big blocks of Velveeta cheese used to come in a plastic rectangular tub like the mud pan but a little smaller with vertical sides.
I just found mine in the refrigerator one day. I thought, "wow I can put that to good use." It now has a couple sponges sticking out of it in my hatcher with a length of CPVC pipe running into it I can fill from outside.


If anyone is having trouble getting humidity up, remember that it is surface area rather than volume that is key. A sponge or something that is absorbent sticking up out of the water helps.

thanks! i had 10 eggs cooking and 2 clears and i candled on Christmas and one seems to have quit but all the others still have veins and movement that i can see! and right now i have 4 pullets. They just started squatting for me a few days ago so i should have eggs soon i hope!

Wow! While I was catching up, you went from just about talking the wife into the LG, to shopping for a liner to getting a SPORTSMAN, Good job!

And yeah im going to ask him to build a small coop maybe 4'x4' with an attached run. and we will build something for the heat lamp. Then it can be for sick birds, quarantine, or chicks. Hes really good at building things so im excited it should come out nice.
